I let stray cats hang out around here, too. However, I don't feed them. The birds think the food is theirs! But, the other reason that I don't feed them, is because they are mousers. So, I let them stick around because they hunt the mice invasion, in my back yard. They like to sleep in my garden boxes, and on my garden table. No, I've never found any feces in there, thank goodness. As soon as I do, they're outta here. But, they seem to feel safe here. But, they don't come near me, as a rule, and they skedaddle when I come outside.
One time, and only one time, I fed a cat. He was flea ridden and cold. Snow on the ground, that year and he found a warm place on a chair on our front deck to sleep. Every night, he would come. So, I put an old beach towel in the chair and he used it to nestle with. One morning, I decided to go ahead and feed him. I set out a plate of sardines, and he ate it, like he hadn't eaten in days. So, before I left for work, I set out another plate, but this time it was left overs from my fridge, as I was out of sardines. When I got home from work, that evening, I noticed that our deck was just absolutely covered with white spots. Bird doodoo. I came in the house and the first thing Ed said to me is, "PLEASE don't EVER feed those cats, again! Hundreds of birds attacked it, right after you left and I felt like I was being invaded by Alfred Hitchcock's birds!!"
(I know I told this story, in the past, but couldn't help telling it again.)
This was the cat. I got a picture of him, before I set out the beach towel.

Great cat story Anna WOW!!!
Well Sunny doesn't seem that old....he is about 10 I am guessing, but Sinbad the cat we adopted when a neighbor left him was about 19 going on 20.....even tho Sinbad showed his age, he was out and about until the day we had to put him down.
We always wonder where Sunny goes. He will come eat at our place for a few days, weeks, sometimes even months..... and then, we won't see him for days, weeks or months we always worry something bad has happened or maybe someone else feeds him and he travels ....sort of like from one 'cat restaurant' to another like food critics do LOL
Cheryl: When we had our Airedale Terrier dog, we had 5 house cats. And ever since then we have been push overs for any hungry animal.
I feed all the birds, including the seagulls....which can be annoying, because they often ( not always) call their brethren, and take about a scene out of the birds movie!!

Good morning all! Sorry I'm so late today, but I just had to first write about what the Lord's been teaching me for some time now, while it was fresh in my mind. fresh-hope.com/thread/3344/view We had a strange thing happen with a semi-wild cat we have been feeding for the last couple of years.
Last week, it "SEEMED" like he had a total change of heart and decided we could pet him!!!!
At first, I was so shocked I wondered, is this really Sunny? ....he did seem somehow a little different...I couldn't put my finger on it tho.
But then ,even tho he was rubbing against my leg, and I was petting him, he all of a sudden gave his usual scared hiss..... and I thought yup, that's him alright.
But then.....
yesterday afternoon, I saw (and heard) "Sunny" crying on the roof of the garage next door. So I thought, well I will get him some food ,and he will figure out how to get down if he is stuck.
So when I came out the door with food...... what do I see.....double Sunny!!!
There was a Sunny clone!!!
The new friendly version was NOT the real Sunny at all.
I texted our daughter ( who lives next door) and she chirps backs: "Oh cool, twinsies"
Can I insert a roll eyes her LOL
I am going to point out to her, hopefully sometime today.... she already has 'twinsies' ( 2 female black cats)
Sooooooo
She could work on taming these two yellow boys ( I think they are both boys....Sunny the real one is)
and have yellow 'bookends' male cats, to go with her female black cats
Twinsies my foot!! HA! That's so funny! I love how the Lord showed you that it was two different cats!I guess that is unusual that both of the cats look alike. Do you think the cats are from the same litter? I would think so. I used to have a feral cat that lived under my mobile home and I gave him water, but he always kept his distance, about 30 feet away from me, but the cat liked me because it was always there when I went for a walk, just hiding, then he would step out from behind a tree so I could see him and say something to him. I named him Orange, because he had an orange coat of fur. It's such a shame that people abandon cats to the outdoors when they decide they don't want them anymore. Then they have kittens and all grow up feral - that is of course if they survive. Someone in our area did that and the cat was pregnant. thankfully she decided to live under our neighbors house, so after the kittens were born and were about 5 weeks old, we were able to catch them all and take them to the shelter. The mother was already feral by then and didn't trust anyone. She gave Bruce a real hard time catching her. It made us think that whoever owned her before had been cruel to her even before they dumped her outside on her own.Yes Anna that they are from the same litter is a possibility. But I don't think so....but one might be the father? There used to be a guy would lived in our neighborhood who had tons of cats. the cats kept having litters. He was always trying to play catch up and get them spayed or neutered, but there were tooo many and he could not afford to do them all at once. I am not sure they were his cats to begin with or were pets left behind that he was feeding. I think at least one or two were his cats but I never could figure it out because there were a lot of cats. So when he moved I am sure some got left behind. But the original 'Sunny' was left behind when he was approx 5 mts old, and that was 10-12 years ago. A young couple had just had a baby, but then had to move, no landlord would rent to them with a baby AND a cat.....so the cat got abandoned. We did not see him for years, until about 2 years ago when he showed up in our tiny yard.
The clone ( should we call him 'Clone 'LOL) or maybe Orange ) : is stockier and shorter length, they have different color eyes, and the interloper has one ear that looks like it was cut off straight across....so instead of a pointed ear, its straight across at the top...well about 1/4 to 1/3 of the top of his ear is missing.
He ( the sunny look a like) will be petted, but Sunny.... tho he will now come right close to us, still ,will not. What a shame. They should have at least taken the cat to the shelter. It's a lie that all shelters kill the cats. Some will, but many won't. The original Sunny is old now. I wonder what his story is as to why he returned and why he stayed away so long, and where did he live. During world war 2 there was a black cat named Oscar that lived on the German Bismark ship, when the ship sunk and the cat was in the water, he ended up on a British cruiser ship Cosmos (sp), which then got sunk and the cat was in the water again, then rescued out of the water by the British destroyer Legend. The cat's name was changed to Unsinkable Sam, then the Legend ship sunk and the cat was rescued and this time the cat was put on the land at the Straights of Gibraltor and lived in the governor's house. What a great story!I let stray cats hang out around here, too. However, I don't feed them. The birds think the food is theirs! But, the other reason that I don't feed them, is because they are mousers. So, I let them stick around because they hunt the mice invasion, in my back yard. This one is my sleeper:
What a beautiful kitty. I can't stand to see cats abandoned. Whenever we see one, we call our local shelter and get them taken in so they can be fed and tamed and eventually sent to a good forever home. Before we bought our house, we caught our neighbor abandoning his dog. He drove out to the highway of all things and tossed the dog out on the road! Bruce couldn't believe his eyes. The dog was a beautiful dog and well behaved too, although he wasn't well cared for. Bruce brought the dog back and called the police. He was taken to the shelter and now has a good home. Great cat story Anna WOW!!!

LOL I bet it's like a scene from the movie! We just feed our birds and critters - well all except for the bear. But he's big enough to fend for himself anyway. I love seeing all the squirrels, chipmunks and birds eating together peacefully. I love watching them play too. The squirrels amaze me the way the run through the trees on the branches, like cars on a highway up in the sky! They go on the smallest branches even as though they were wide highways, without even seeming to think about it! Even the babies do! I watch them every morning since the trees are all along this side of our house. After playing like that for awhile, they start to head for the bird feeder. Next thing you know, Nosy, (one of our bluejays) will come and check out the bird feeder. If it's full, he'll call out to the rest of the birds and within minutes there's tons of birds all over the feeder, the trees, and the ground, as well as the squirrels. The chipmunks come out to the feeder at the same time too. Then it all happens again around supper time. Sometimes there's other critters, like the turkeys, the racoon, the fox, the deer, etc. But they don't come every day, just once in awhile. All are welcome to come and eat, as long as they get along with the others

I like to watch food critics traveling from one restaurant to another. lol, especially street food in India. I have watched so many of those videos that I am starting to cook like them.
We are having nice weather here and the lawnmower needs to be repaired before the next rain, not that I have lovely grass to mow like Cheryl has, but I will have to mow down the young tumbleweeds before they get large and and tough and can't be mowed.
Cindy that is nice that you have squirrels and chipmunks to watch on their busy tree highways, I don't have them here to watch. I saw a red breasted bird today outside at the bird feeder and the other lovely birds, some are gray in color.

speaking of birds....we have a new hummingbird with a red body....not just its chest like a ruby...anyone know what he or she might be?
I think Sunny clone is so friendly he may be almost totally tame or soon will be. My daughter would really like to tame the calico girl. If anyone can it will be Hossanah. When we lived in Hawaii, we lived behind some friends that had 8 children.
There was a feral cat that all the older children had tried forever to even to get it to come out of the woods to no avail. one day while Leonard and I were out with Hossanah who was 2 years old at the time ( close to 3 years)
the neighbor and most of her 8 children were out also Hossanah walked to the edge of the woods...we all were keeping an eye on her when Lo and behold, she stoops down and picks up the feral cat, and walks over to us, carrying it in her arms!!!
We all were stunned!!
She has already lured the calico to come right up to her and take food out of her hand( by offering the little one a piece of chicken) and cooing softly to her.
Humph! I still think she should work on Sunny and Sunny 2 also LOL She seems to think the boys are my project.

I was just able to buy from our landlord an old commercial maxi 4000 vitamix.... it looks like the only 'problem' is an old gasket but I see replacements on e-bay.
Just to give it a spin and try it out, I made some applesauce this morning and could not believe how powerful, efficient, and fast it was!!!
Do any of you have one , and do you have any favorite things you make in it?
Apparently you can do a LOT of things, from the usual smoothies, to soups, to ice cream (?), gravies, grind grains, and so on.
My landlord has a recipe book for it but he will have to bring it next time he comes down from Portland.

Beautiful day here. I finished laundry and now I'm on the patio. I found out why we are receiving so much junk mail with our legal names on it, not the usual short names we use. I thought that the retirement community we now live at had sold our names to marketing companies, but the culprit is the postal service. When you fill out their change of address form, you are giving them permission to sell your name and new address. The next time I'm going by the post office, I'll get another change of address form and look at the fine print. I also discovered that you can log on to the Direct Mail Marketing Association, fill out more forms and hopefully your name will be removed from junk mail lists.

That is good that you got a vitimix. I would make soups and freeze the extra soup. I like soup blended smooth. I want to do that and just have soup for lunch. Here is a recipe.
Kale Pesto
-----------------
(You can use any greens you like!)
2 cups packed Kale leaves.
2 cloves garlic.
1/4 cup pine nuts.
2/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil, divided.
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste.
1/2 cup freshly grated Pecorino cheese.
Put the kale, garlic, pine nuts, and half the olive oil in a food processor and process until fairly smooth. Remove to a bowl. Fold in the cheese and the rest of the oil. Use immediately or store in the fridge for a few days or a few months in the freezer!
Isn't it nice to see how children often have a special way with animals, I have seen that before also. Margie, good luck on putting an end to the junk mail.

Margie, good luck on putting an end to the junk mail. It's strange, I guess, but that was one of the first things I noticed when I met my husband. Children and animals loved him. Seriously, LOL. I decided that since that was the case, I'd better at least give him a try. I'm glad I did He told me that he's always had that reaction from animals and that he's had that reaction from children ever since he grew up. I had the same experience with animals when I was a child, and with children once I was grown. If I'd be sitting in a waiting room, (with or without my own children) other peoples children would just come to me on their own....I guess they could tell I loved children. I've noticed too that it seems to run in families, as most of my children are the same way. Other people's children and animals gravitate to them naturally. (I say animals, but really mean both birds and animals).

Cindy: You are right, the ability with animals runs in the family....Leonard always like to claim, animals are scared of him....but its exactly the opposite and both our children, are great with animals , as per my story of Hossanah. But our son at age 3 had the highest reading for allergies of a child that age..... so cats should NOT have been in our house.... only problem was if we had gotten rid of the cats, he would have been packing a little nap sack and been on the road, each and every day...seriously. He was an easy going little one.....but get rid of the cats (and dogs) was THE only thing he couldn't bear.
Sooooo he lived and still does ( with his own 3 cats) taking allergy medicine all the days of his life!
And both grandchildren also, have a kind hearted loving way, with our Lord's little creatures.
So I feel pretty certain (99.9999%) that our 3 rd grandchild ( Liam)...
who is to come into the world April 11...
will be equally an 'animal magnet' ( he will be born into a home with 3 cats right from the get go).
The thing about the vitamix is people who bought them even in the late 50's still have them, and use them....buy a cheap bleader today and if it last a couple of years, you can call it good).
The steel they made the vitamix out of , was the same quality as used on the navy's big ships
and the motor probably could fly a 747 jet LOL Those motors are intense!!
you can make soup in them ( there is no heater, but just the blades running for a few minutes so intensely cause the veggies to heat up) conversely you can actually make ice cream, you can make your own flour, ( it will pulverize any grain) or something as simple as a smoothie.
All my life I have wanted either ( or both LOL) a Norwalk juicer, or a Vitamix blender......so now I have one... of the two ....yeah LOL
and I am even more amazed at what it can do!!!
Thank you for the recipe Anna cool!!! Do you have or did you ever have a Vitamix?
I have heard about them for decades but they were always waaaay out of my price range!!!
Ha...
I just did a search for a restaurant new one: it is almost $2000.00
A brand new 'commercial' one costs
( I have one from the 70's I am thinking)....
is almost $800!!!
The thing is, the new ones have 'plastic' jars,( $2000 worth of plastic... LOL but really, its the motor that's the thing!)
while the old ones, like mine even the jar is stainless steel.

Hi Barbra, I don't have anything nice like a vitamix blender, just a cheap blender and after using it a few times I wonder how long it will last. I also have a cheap juicer, and one of those cheap one cup blenders for smoothies. I hand crank and grind flour or corn sometimes. What is nice about the vitamix blender is that your children can use it also and some day they will get the blender and it will still be working. Let us know what you make with your vitamix.
It is a nice breezy warm day here today. I gave Ron a haircut this morning. Ron went to visit Art's son Wayne, who is our age. He will bring back so old books that Art had, only because it will make Donna feel good that Ron gets the books. I don't have any extra storage space, so hopefully we won't keep the books for long.

Not much to report here. Elijah is now a boy scout. The ceremony was fantastic. They lit an arrow and sent it flying into a hay bale toward the end, because the ceremony and the badge they get is called "the arrow of light" as they are to follow God and righteousness like an arrow of light and so do well in this life. (I didn't get the exact words but it's something like that )
I got stuck in God's Word today as I began studying Galatians and have been blessed with a book of sermons from 1833 on this book and Ephesians. It's awesome! I wonder how his sermons were received 184 years ago? Well, I'm certainly enjoying them. I have to laugh too because I know that often people think I write very long articles (or whatever they're called) about only a few verses, but you should see how long this mans are on only one verse! It makes mine look real short But then I noticed that MacArthur and Wiersbe are the same way. I guess it's just something that happens to us all.
Other than that, not much has happened. Just the usual daily chores. Well, I'm off to the bible study threads. I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Hi, everyone. I'm sorry to be so silent, but I've been reading and keeping caught up on what everyone is up to. I start to type something, and then just get up and walk away from it. I have so much to do around here, that I can't keep me focus on just one thing. And..........well........that's what I just did, too. I've been gone for a bit. So, I guess I'd better submit this.

Did lots of paperwork today. Trying to keep up with health insurance requirements.
Cindy: Being "stuck in God's Word" is a good place to be stuck.
After doing some more digging I found out that the Texas Driver's License agency also sells our names/addresses to marketing companies. And of course when you move to a new address you're required to submit your info in order to get a current license. So that's where some of the junk mail is originating. Good Grief!

Wow, Margie. That's awful! Apparently, it's everyone who does this now. When I got my PTIN from the IRS so that I could be a PAID tax preparer, a couple years ago, I started getting, and STILL get junk related to the same thing. In my email and my snail mail. And I'm REALLY sick of getting mailings from Media-Com. It's a really terrible cable internet/TV company who just won't leave us alone. We've been getting that junk, since we moved here 5-1/2 years ago. Sometimes, that's the only thing in the mailbox, and SO not worth the effort to go get whatever the mail carrier put in the box. I tried looking up the Direct Mail Marketing Association and can't find a similar website address to the name. I don't want to be clicking on and submitting my mailing address to the wrong site. Do you have a link to it?

Cindy: Who was the pastor of the sermons from 1833 ... and the title of the book you are reading on Ephesians?
The Pastor's name is Charles Simeon and the book is called Horae Homileticae Vol. 17: Galatians-Ephesians. He did the same for the whole Bible. Horae is Latin for "Hours" and Homiletics is the art of preparing sermons and preaching.

You must have posted while I was posting mine LOL.
Oh, wow, you made me really have to think, as I just posted something about Psalm 103, and couldn't for the life of me remember posting about psalm 22 LOL Then I realized you must have meant in the bible study thread. That's neat that you got to read it. I hope you found it helpful. David is one fascinating guy, that's for sure.

Hi everybody, happy Saturday.
I've been sitting here reading, catching up with you all. It's been so long since I comment on each person's post, as I used to occasionally do, and as Cindy and Cheryl are so good at doing.
I will comment on the Vita Mix though - I have one, just the basic model. We got it about 2-1/2 years ago at one of those demos they do at Costco. I'd had my eye on one for a long time and had started making smoothies in our old Hamilton Beach blender in efforts to boost Daniel's immunity (which worked very well, by the way - he drank green smoothies all through 10th grade and stayed perfectly well until we slacked off at the end of the school year). Anyway, we bought the Vita Mix and I like it, but yes the container is made of plastic and I REALLY wish it were glass! (My old Hamilton Beach blender has a glass container and I won't get rid of it for that reason & because it still works.) Another thing is that the container is so tall and skinny, it's too high to sit on the counter and fit up under the cabinet above, when it's attached to the base. They now make a shorter, squarish "low profile" container that fits the base and fits under the upper cabinets, but I'm not paying the price they want for that.
About the only thing we use ours for is smoothies. I have made soup a time or two (that's one of the things they always make & give out as samples during the demos) and it's really good, but as you say you have to let the motor run for such a long time to get the soup to heat up (about 7 minutes) -- and it is loud -- that I'd just rather make soup on the stove.
It is a good ice crusher.
I made salsa in there a time or two - that was delicious.
Daniel uses it the most, right now, to make protein shakes after he works out. As of this week, I'm trying to force myself to make (& drink) a green smoothie every day (I posted a photo on FB of one - it's so pretty!) because my cholesterol is WAY up!

So what's everybody doing today? Timothy is coming over in awhile and we have to take Thunder for his shots; his favorite day of the year.

Thanks for your post Anna As I said mine is 30 or 40 years old and has a stainless steel container.
I did see a video where instead of running it for 5 mins to make soup they just stick in all the ingredients and pour in 'hot' water, and so its done in the usual 30 seconds or a minute depending on whats being used ( obviously if one is making tomato, mushroom, squash etc. soup it will probably be done faster than broccoli, lentil etc. soup.)
The other option is to make it cold and heat it when you get it creamy or whatever, in a pot on the stove.
I have also seen a video where they have said because the vitamix has such a massive powerful motor ( the reason if one wanted to run it and have the vitamix heat the soup to boiling.... due to the friction of the blades)
the problem is even tho ....the 'plastic' ones they make now, so that you can throw on the ground and it will bounce not crack or break.....
but.....
since the speed of the old one is something like 380 rotations per second (rps) the new one are I think maybe 800 rps
because it is soooooooooo strong, but made of plastic ....it actually pits the plastic jar and over time may be putting flakes of plastic in the food ( prob less plastic at its slower speeds?).
Of course, not a problem with the ancient old stainless steel ( the same they made the old US navy boats out of).
On e-bay one can buy the old steel containers (or glass?) ....and usually for a good price
being e-bay... I usually search for lowest to highest...
because the price for an item can be all over the place....
and the high priced listings are not necessarily any better than the lowest priced....
of course one should also check the feedback rating....
but even then if there are negatives, its best to go read the complaints...
some are legit, some are from competitors, and some are just silly like:
'it came a day late'.... well duh.... that is most likely not the sellers issue, if, they shipped it on the date they promised).

Thank you, Cindy for giving Cheryl the correct name and address of the marketing company.
Cooler today. I wore a sweater to Sunday School. Took a nap; don't feel like doing much.

Just6 a heads up for everyone.... I have to work on our taxes later this week, probably Thursday or Friday, and I'm leaning toward Friday. The reason I'm telling you guys is that I'll have to take the day off to do it, so I won't be here after Thursday until the following Monday.
I hope everyone had a good weekend. The kids came over on Saturday so we enjoyed their visit as always. Then on Sunday we did our shopping as usual and then went to one of the really big stores in the city for a change. I was shocked at how much stuff they had! Sadly, my back was acting up and I couldn't really enjoy it, so I asked Bruce if we could go back next Sunday or sometime soon anyway. So hopefully we'll be able to.

Just received this valuable information via email:Medicare Part G If you are an older senior citizen and can no longer take care of yourself and need Long-Term Care, but the government says there is no Nursing Home care available for you, what do you do? You may opt for Medicare Part G. The plan gives anyone 75 or older a gun (Part G) and one bullet. You may then shoot one worthless politician. This means you will be sent to prison for the rest of your life where you will receive three meals a day, a roof over your head, central heating and air conditioning, cable TV, a library, and all the health care you need. Need new teeth? No problem. Need glasses? That’s great. Need a hearing aid, new hip, knees, kidney, lungs, or heart? They are all covered! As an added bonus, your kids can come and visit you at least as often as they do now! And, who will be paying for all of this? The same government that just told you they can't afford for you to go into a nursing home. And you will get rid of a useless politician while you are at it. And now, because you are a prisoner, you don't have to pay any more income taxes! Is this a great country or what?

Cindy, I also do not like green drinks, but I do make wheatgrass juice sometimes and drink it, but it is the worst tasting drink I have ever had. It makes me feel better if I can blame someone else for talking me into wheatgrass juice, so I'll blame wheatgrass juice trucker guy, the video that he made about how he makes the drink all the time in his truck and likes it and about the health benefits from drinking it.

I am sorry to hear your back is acting up again, Cindy and maybe worse, having to do taxes!! Thanks Barbara, but it's back to normal now. I think it was just the stormy weather we were having that caused the extra pain. I don't think doing the taxes will hurt it though, as that doesn't cause me stress or anything. Now if the weather gets bad, maybe LOLKinda remind me of food processor that my mom had in the 1970s way before informical KCOP used show commericals BTW I been listen to this local Radio station it went from Classical music to American Songbook to Oldies radio station play music from the 1950s and 60 into 70s they play rarely hear songs way back in da day LA needed good oldies station we have one for about 10 years it was good but turn into Hip hop station last year player.listenlive.co/35971/en Glad you're able to listen to a good one Kelly!I used have a cat like that original my neighbor cat when she move the cat didn't want go with her so my neighor next door to me take turn feed him then he move I was left with cat so cat adopted me and my family I'm glad you guys took care of the cat. LOL I can't stand anything like that. Bruce and I are all for the way people ate in the old days - plenty of fat and salt, and lots of starches too LOL. We won't buy anything that's labeled "organic" or "natural" "low fat" etc. Much of that stuff is no different really than the regular, they just put those labels on it to make people think it is so they'll buy it. So we won't. LOL Seriously though, it seems strange that there's such a push for low fat, natural, organic, low salt, etc. and so many go for it that supermarkets are filled with that stuff now, and yet people are in the worst shape physically than ever in our countries history and are sicker than they've ever been. Something isn't adding up...
Well I'd better get busy, see you all in another forum!
