I see so many things that are wrong on facebook every time I go there that others seem to think is perfectly fine. They are Christians, and yet the promote the world's ideals, ideas, philosophy etc which goes against God's Word, but sadly, they don't seem to realize it. Either that, or they don't care. Last night I decided that I'd go through some of the posts on facebook and simply copy the things that are false and show why they are. I hope it will open eyes so that others will know we simply cannot accept things just because they sound good or sweet or nice or are comforting. I pray to the Lord that it will!
I saw a cute picture of children hugging. It was titled: "Love comes naturally, hate is learned". Sounds good, but it's not true. Love doesn't come naturally, hate does. Goodness and righteousness does not come naturally, sin does. Do you teach your children to hit, bite, cheat, take things that aren't theirs? No, they do those things anyway and we try to teach them not to do them again. Do you teach them to be selfish? Of course not, they already are. We try to teach them to share and think of others. The bible says that we are not good, that there's nothing good in us, until we are saved and then the only good in us is the love God has poured into our hearts. His love is the only "good true love" there is. Human love expressed before salvation is not pure or true or good. It's basically selfish.
Next was a picture of a child's face. The title said, "Always smile back at little children. To ignore them is to destroy their belief that the world is good." Again, it sounds good, but it's not true. Not if you believe what the bible teaches. The bible tells us that the world is NOT good. It is Satan's domain and everything about it is evil except those things done in faith of the One True God.
Next was a picture that said: "12 Steps for Self Care. " Number 1 was, "If it feels wrong, don't do it". Not what the bible says. The bible says not to trust our feelings. God commands us to do many things that aren't comfortable for us, that don't "feel good" at least at first. Number 3 was "don't be a people pleaser" and yet Paul was just that in many ways. He tells us, “To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some.” (1 Corinthians 9:22) “Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.” (1 Corinthians 9:19) and “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” (Romans 12:18) I could also post the many scriptures that tell us that we're to put all other people before ourselves (Romans 12:10; Philippians 2:3) That sure sounds like a people pleaser to me! Number 9 is one we see a lot of in various forms. It said, "be kind to yourself". By itself, it's not bad, but it's the other ways it's shown and said that it is bad and goes against God's Word. We generally see it as "take care of yourself first" or "take care Number 1" and you're number 1. But we're not supposed to be first in our lives and we're not supposed to be concerned with "taking care of ourselves." We're supposed to know that's God's job and trust Him to do it. He's supposed to be first in our lives, then our spouse, then our children, then others, and last of all ourselves. I don't have time to list the scriptures for these any more, but if anyone wants them, just ask and I'll give them to you. Number 10 was "let go of what you can't control." Excuse me....but we can't control anything! God is the one who's in control, not us! If we think we are in control of anything in our life, we're lying to ourselves and sinning against God because we're supposed to recognize that He is the only one in control and that any time we try to control anything we're rebelling against Him. Next was, "stay away from drama and negativity". Sounds good yet again, but did Jesus do that? it seems to me that He was constantly surrounded by drama and negativity! The whole world is negative - how do you suggest we stay away from it? Hide our heads in the sand and pretend it doesn't exist? That's tolerating it, not solving it and bringing peace, which is what we're called to do!
Next was a pretty picture that said, "share if you have a grandmother in heaven watching over you". Nice sentiment isn't it? Yet it's a false teaching. People that have died before us are not "watching over us". They are either in heaven or hell, and whichever place they are in, they are busy with their own lives, not sitting around on clouds watching ours! They can't see us or hear us. Only God can do that. They didn't suddenly become able to see and hear everything on earth the way the Lord can when they died.
Then there was one of a emoticon that said, "if you see me smiling it's because I'm thinking of doing something evil or naughty. If you see me laughing, it's because I've already done it." Funny? Sorry, I'm appalled by it. What a slap in God's face! And this was posted by a Christian! It sure doesn't represent the Jesus I know. “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.” (Romans 12:9)
How about one that says, "less friends, less bullshit, keep your circle small and your beer cold." Another one that must make the Lord cringe as it goes against His Word in several different ways. First, we're not to use foul language, second, we're to be kind and friendly to everyone. We're not to be concerned for ourselves, but instead be more concerned for others. Last, but not least, we're to represent Jesus in everything we say, do and think. I'm sorry, but I can't see Jesus saying this
Next I saw a bunch of different posts that put groups of people down. In general it was democrats, politicians, lawyers, and various other groups. Then, amazingly the next post was one that said, "Strong people don't put others down, they lift them up"! All these were from the same person.
I've seen posts by Christians encouraging others to check out their horoscope - do I really need to show what God has to say about that? Again, everything we do and say is supposed to represent Christ. I seriously doubt if He would encourage anyone to read their horoscope even "just for fun".
Then there's one that made me sad. It said something along the lines of, "after all those trials and hurts, I looked in the mirror saw the bruises but saw I'd survived, I'd made it through; so I straightened my crown and walked away like a boss." Really?????? You did it? According to the Lord, He's the one that gets us through things and makes us the victor instead of the victim! My bible says God is the boss, not me.
How about the one that says, "never regret anything that makes you smile". Not what God says. Sin makes many people smile until they have to start paying the price. I would suggest they repent like God tells us to.
I could continue giving examples of things I've seen, and I just may add to this thread another day, but for today, this is all I have time for.
