Israel's refusal to allow substantial aid into the Gaza Strip has left its population facing famine and life-threatening medical supply shortages.

A ship carrying 200 tons of aid is approaching the coast of Gaza, inaugurating a new sea route from Cyprus that was intended to bring more assistance to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the enclave five months into the war between Israel and Hamas.

The ship, manned by the Spanish aid group Open Arms, left Cyprus on Tuesday towing a barge laden with food sent by World Central Kitchen, the charity founded by celebrity chef José Andrés. It could be seen off Gaza's coast on Friday morning

First aid ship reaches Gaza amid new efforts to step up relief to besieged enclave

The first aid ship carrying much-needed food has reached the shoreline of central Gaza as part of new efforts to ease a humanitarian crisis in the besieged enclave.

Workers have been unpacking the 200 tons of food aid on smaller boats off the shore of the Gaza City neighborhood of Sheikh Ajleen, according to a journalist on the scene who works for CNN.

The initiative is led by the non-profit World Central Kitchen (WCK) and the ship is run the Spanish charity Open Arms.

First aid boat unloads in Gaza — reports
The first ship carrying food aid along a maritime corridor from Cyprus to Gaza began unloading its cargo in the besieged Palestinian enclave on Friday.

Footage from the AFP news agency showed the Open Arms, the vessel which set sail from Cyprus on Tuesday, towing a barge that the Spanish charity operating it says is loaded with 200 tons of food for Gazans threatened with famine after more than five months of war.

"World Central Kitchen is unloading the barge connected now to the jetty," said Linda Roth, a spokesperson for the US charity that is working with Open Arms.
