The blasts struck an event marking the fourth anniversary of the killing of Qassim Soleimani, the head of the Revolutionary Guard's elite Quds Force, who died in a US drone strike in Iraq in January 2020.

Explosions at an event honouring a prominent Iranian general slain in a US airstrike in 2020 have killed at least 103 people and wounded more than 200 others, state-run media in Iran reported on Wednesday.

A senior official called the blasts a “terroristic" attack, without elaborating on who could be behind them amid wider tensions in the Middle East over Israel's ongoing war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

No group immediately claimed responsibility.

Israel on alert for Hezbollah retaliation after strike kills senior Hamas leader in Beirut

Israel is on high alert for an escalation with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah after a top Hamas official was killed in an Israeli strike on Beirut - fuelling concerns about further escalation of conflict in the Middle East.

Israel has insisted the killing of a top Hamas leader in Beirut was not an attack on Lebanon.

However, an Israeli spokesman said the attack that killed Saleh al-Arouri was a "surgical strike against the Hamas leadership".

Hamas denounced the killing as a "terrorist act", while Hamas ally Hezbollah said it was an assault on Lebanese sovereignty.

'Islamic State' claims responsibility for bombings in Iran

The so-called Islamic State claimed responsibility for two devastating explosions that killed 84 people at a commemoration in Iran marking Qasem Soleimani's assassination by the United States.

The Islamist militant extremist group posted a statement on its affiliate Telegram channels taking responsibility for the attack saying two of its members "activated their explosives vests."

Two bombs exploded in the Iranian city of Kerman on Wednesday and killed scores gathered to commemorate the death of Soleimani, a prominent Iranian general leader killed by a US drone strike in neighboring Iraq in 2020.

The blast was the deadliest attack on Iranian soil in the 45-year history of the Islamic Republic.

Suicide bombers reportedly carried out bombings
Earlier, Iranian state media reported suicide bombers probably carried out the attacks.
