Hamas has fired rockets toward the Israeli city of Ashkelon – as the country's military said babies and children were among those killed during Saturday's attack by the Palestinian militant group.

Israeli soldiers have been retrieving bodies from homes in the Kfar Aza kibbutz in southern Israel.

Israeli Major General Itai Veruv, escorting journalists at the scene, said: "You see the babies, the mothers, the fathers, in their bedrooms, in their protection rooms and how the terrorist kills them", according to the Reuters news agency.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) told Sky News: "We cannot confirm any numbers. What happened in Kibbutz Kfar Aza is a massacre in which women, children, toddlers and elderly were brutally butchered in an ISIS way of action."

‘Overwhelming majority’ of EU states against cutting Palestinian aid: Borrell
The EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell made the comments a day after the European Commission backtracked on an announcement suspending Palestinian aid.

The suspension prompted rebuke from some member states, with foreign ministers meeting earlier today to discuss the situation.

“The overwhelming majority of the member states considered that we have to continue our support to the Palestinian Authority and the payments due should not be delayed,” Borrell said after a meeting of EU foreign affairs ministers.

2 senior Hamas members killed in Israel strikes, IDF says




Two senior Hamas members – Minister of Economy Jawad Abu Shammala and senior member of the Hamas political bureau Zachariah Abu Maamar – were killed in overnight strikes, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.

Abu Shammala was responsible in his role for managing terrorism funding within and outside of the Gaza Strip, the IDF said, while describing Abu Maamar as "a senior Hamas decision-maker and coordinator between terror groups in the Gaza Strip."

Abu Maamar was a "known confidant" to Yahya Sinwar, who is the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the IDF said.

Hamas in turn on Tuesday confirmed the deaths in a statement on its Telegram channel, describing them as “Hamas political office members.”

Israel agrees to form emergency government
Israeli opposition politician Benny Gantz has agreed to form a national unity government with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the Hamas terror attacks.

A statement from Gantz also said a five-member "war-management" cabinet would be established.

The unity government will only be tasked with the security situation in Israel and will not sign off on any legislation or make decisions not tied to the ongoing conflict, according to the statement.

It's unclear how the national unity government will impact Netanyahu's partners in his current governing coalition. Netanyahu's coalition mostly consists of ultra-orthodox and far-right parties.

Why is Gaza out of fuel — and what now?
The enclave is under a power blackout after Israel has stopped all fuel, food and other essential supplies.


Israel has bombarded the densely populated Gaza Strip, home to about 2.3 million people, with missiles since the Palestinian group Hamas launched a surprise attack last weekend.

Now, the enclave is without power, pushed into a complete energy blackout after Gaza’s sole power plant will run out of fuel on Wednesday, affecting essential services including hospitals.





Where does Gaza get its electricity?
Israel cut off the electricity supply and blocked the entry of food and fuel to the Gaza Strip as part of a “total siege” strategy adopted on Monday, in retaliation against the Hamas attack.

Why EU won't suspend aid to Palestinians after Hamas attacks


Reeling from the shock of terrorist group Hamas' devastating assault inside Israeli territory over the weekend, the European Union's Palestinian policy quickly fell into disarray after comments from European Neighborhood Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi.

Varhelyi, who is responsible for overseeing relations with nearby states, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to announce that €691 million ($732 million) of development aid for Palestinians would be suspended.

"The scale of terror and brutality against Israel and its people is a turning point," Varhelyi wrote.

The official Israeli death toll climbed to 1,200 on Wednesday, plus Hamas seized dozens of hostages.

11 teachers and 30 students of UN-run schools have died in Gaza, UN says

Eleven teachers in schools in Gaza run by the United Nations and 30 students have been killed in the violence, the UN said Wednesday.

An additional three teachers and eight students were also injured, according to the UN.

As 1,000 houses in Gaza have been destroyed and 560 rendered uninhabitable, 220,000 people are seeking refuge from air strikes, the UN said.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his trip to Israel, the secretary said Wednesday.

“Not since ISIS have we seen this kind of depravity, and we will continue to stand very resolutely against it,” Blinken in comments to reporters before his departure.
The US is aware of 22 Americans who were killed following attacks by Hamas last weekend, Blinken noted, adding, "That number could still go up, and it probably will."

UK to arrange flights for Britons stranded in Israel
The UK is in the process of arranging flights to get stranded British nationals out of Israel, the Foreign Office has said.

The first plane will leave Tel Aviv later on Thursday, with more set to depart in the coming days "subject to security".

They emphasised that those eligible to leave will be contacted directly and that British nationals should not go to airports unless they are specifically told to do so.

A team of UK diplomats, trained in crisis managment, have already been to dispatched to Israel to assist British nationals.

The move is a U-turn from the UK government who said earlier this week it would not arrange evacuation flights because commercial routes were still available.

In the last few days, however, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, EasyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Air France, Lufthansa and Emirates have all suspended flights.

The government-arranged flights will be chartered by the Foreign Office but are commercial services, meaning that each passenger will be charged a fee of £300 (or about €347).

Gaza evacuation plan 'unacceptable,' says Turkey's Erdogan
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called Israel's order for civilians to leave the northern Gaza Strip within 24 hours "unacceptable."

The order, which affects more than 1 million Gaza residents, comes as Israel amasses tanks for an expected ground assault.

"To force the population of Gaza to migrate in 24 hours is unacceptable," Erdogan said.

The Turkish president added that any forced evacuation of civilians "is a clear violation of international law."




Hezbollah says ready for 'action' against Israel
The Lebanese Islamist militant organization Hezbollah says it is "fully prepared" to take action against Israel.

"We, as Hezbollah, are contributing to the confrontation and will (continue) to contribute to it within our vision and plan," Hezbollah deputy chief Naim Qassem said at a pro-Palestinian rally in the predominantly Shi'ite southern suburbs of Lebanon's capital Beirut.

"We are fully prepared, and when the time comes for action, we will take it," he said.

Hezbollah is aligned with Iran. Its military arm is designated as a terrorist organization by the European Union, France and others, while both its military and political wings are considered terrorist by US, Germany, Israel and several Sunni Arab countries.

The group's political wing holds 12% of seats in Lebanon's parliament and maintains close ties with the ruling parties.

Qassem rejected international calls for Hezbollah to stay out of the conflict between Israel and the Hamas militant group, which is also backed by Iran.

'No doubt' Israel is preparing Gaza ground operation: military analyst
Military analyst Frank Ledwidge told DW that all indications pointed to an imminent ground operation by Israeli forces into Gaza.

"The preparations are visible to everybody. Whilst there may be an element of surprise to this, there's no doubt at all that they're going in," Ledwidge said.

The former UK military intelligence officer said an Israeli ground offensive in the Gaza Strip, ruled by militant Islamist group Hamas, could take place in the next few days.

Ledwidge said he believed such an operation would look similar to efforts to fight the so-called "Islamic State" (IS) terror group in Iraq and Syria, except that Hamas was better prepared.

"Hamas is far better prepared, better armed, equally motivated," Ledwidge said, comparing the group to IS.

"Hamas ... has drones, it will have prepared tunnels, fortifications, strong points, killing zones and all the rest," he said, adding that Israel would be "cognizant of all that in their planning."

Ledwidge predicted there would be "really tough, bloody, urban fighting."

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken defended Israel’s military actions Friday, saying they were not retaliatory but rather defensive.

“No county can tolerate having a terrorist group come in, slaughter its people in the most unconscionable way, and live like that," Blinken said at a news conference. "What Israel's doing is not retaliation. What Israel is doing is defending the lives of its people and, as I said, trying to make sure that this cannot happen again."
