Meanwhile, in British Columbia, a state of emergency was declared for Kelowna, a city about 300 kilometers (180 miles) east of Vancouver, as fires threatened the region of around 150,000 people. Canada is experiencing a record-setting wildfire season, with more than 1,000 active wildfires burning across the country as of Friday, over half of them out of control.
