Before reading Micah, I'd read in one of my books how Micah used a play on words a lot, so I decided to look up the meanings of the names of the places he was talking about. Check out what I found, it's really neat! (I'll put the meanings of the names in dark green for you.)
“Tell it not in Gath;(sounds like the Hebrew for“tell,”) weep not at all. In Beth Ophrah “house of dust.” roll in the dust. Pass on in nakedness and shame, you who live in Shaphir. “beautiful.” Those who live in Zaanan “going out,” will not come out. Beth Ezel “house of nearness” is in mourning; its protection is taken from you. Those who live in Maroth “bitterness,” writhe in pain, waiting for relief, because disaster has come from the Lord, even to the gate of Jerusalem.“Foundation of peace; teaching peace.” You who live in Lachish, (sounds like the word for “a team of horses,”) harness the team to the chariot. You were the beginning of sin to the Daughter of Zion,“dry parched place.” for the transgressions of Israel “he strives with God, or God will rule" were found in you. Therefore you will give parting gifts to Moresheth Gath.“an inheritance.” The town of Aczib “a lie,” will prove deceptive to the kings of Israel. I will bring a conqueror against you who live in Mareshah.“an inheritance.” He who is the glory of Israel “he strives with God, or God will rule" will come to Adullam. “justice of the people; their testimony,” Shave your heads in mourning for the children in whom you delight; make yourselves as bald as the vulture, for they will go from you into exile.” Micah 1:10–16
Pretty cool, huh?
