Russia Moves Air Defense Missiles into Crimea as Ukraine Tension Grows
by John Hayward 12 Aug 2016
As tensions between Russia and Ukraine increase, the Russians are moving state-of-the-art S-400 Triumph air-defense missiles into Crimea, which the Russians annexed in 2014. Russia claims the Ukrainians are planning to retake the peninsula by force.
The BBC relates statements in Russian media that the Triumph system was earmarked for delivery to Crimea last month and would be used in forthcoming “exercises.” A similar system was deployed to protect Russian assets in Syria after Turkey shot down a Russian warplane in November.
According to Russian news agencies, the missiles were tested at the Kapustin Yar test range in southern Russia before delivery to the air defense regiment in Crimea. They are “designed to hit airborne targets at a range of up to 400km (249 miles) and ballistic missiles at a range of up to 60km, flying at speeds of up to 4.8km per second.”
Ukraine claims there are now 40,000 Russian troops massed along the Crimean border, prompting Ukraine to call its own forces to the highest state of alert.

U.S. imposes sanctions on 'Putin's bridge' to Crimea
By Jack Stubbs and Yeganeh Torbati Sep 1, 2016
Companies building a multi-billion dollar bridge to link the Russian mainland with annexed Crimea, a project close to the heart President Vladimir Putin, were targeted by the United States in an updated sanctions blacklist on Thursday.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury added dozens of people and companies to the list, first introduced after Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 and expanded over its support for separatist rebels in the east of the country.
As well as multiple subsidiaries of Russian gas giant Gazprom (GAZP.MM) and 11 Crimean officials, the Treasury named seven companies directly involved in the construction of the 19 km (11.8 miles) road-and-rail connection across the Kerch Strait, dubbed "Putin's bridge" by some Russians.
Chief among those were SGM-Most, a subsidiary of lead contractor Stroygazmontazh which is already under U.S. sanctions, and sub-contractor Mostotrest (MSTT.MM), one of Russia's biggest bridge builders.
"Treasury stands with our partners in condemning Russia's violation of international law, and we will continue to sanction those who threaten Ukraine's peace, security and sovereignty," said John Smith, acting director of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, which levies sanctions.

Russia Prepares For War
By PNW Staff October 13, 2016
Ominous signs continue to emerge out of Russia as media sources in Russia report that state officials and government workers were told to bring back their children studying abroad immediately, even if means cutting their education short and not waiting until the end of the school year.
The reason for the instruction was not clear, but the two suggested possibilities by most analysts: Russia is preparation for war against the West, or President Vladimir Putin is displaying his domination over the country's oligarchs and forcing those with children studying in the US and Europe to bring them home.
Taken in isolation such actions may not seem that troubling, however mounting tensions between Russia and the United States, as well as other NATO block countries have been a source of concern for months now.
Many experts fear that Russia has begun to accelerate to a war footing. From direct warnings to the United States in Syria to thinly veiled threats of invasion in Sweden, Estonia, Lithuania and Norway, Russia is making its intentions clear while at the same time positioning warships, anti-aircraft missiles, nuclear weapons and divisions of its military in preparation for war.

Russia demands Washington explain after reports say US military hacked into Russian networks
5 Nov, 2016 RTNews
Russia expects Washington to provide an explanation after a report claimed that Pentagon cyber-offensive specialists have hacked into Russia’s power grids, telecommunications networks, and the Kremlin's command systems for a possible sabotage.
“If no official reaction from the American administration follows, it would mean state cyberterrorism exists in the US. If the threats of the attack, which were published by the US media, are carried out, Moscow would be justified in charging Washington,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said, according to the ministry's website.
NBC News said earlier in an exclusive report that US military hackers have penetrated crucial infrastructure in Russia, “making them vulnerable to attack by secret American cyber weapons should the US deem it necessary.”
The report was based on the account of a senior US intelligence official and top-secret documents. NBC said the hack was carried out in preparation for waging a full-scale cyberwar with Russia.

Ex-U.S. ambassador to Moscow says banned from entering Russia
Nov 12, 2016 Reuters
Russia has banned Michael McFaul, a former U.S. ambassador to Moscow under President Barack Obama, from entering the country, McFaul and Russian Foreign Ministry sources said.
Russia has a travel ban in place on some U.S. officials in retaliation for a U.S. ban on Russian officials entering the United States.
McFaul, U.S. ambassador in Moscow from 2012-2014, said he had learnt of the ban when applying for a visa to Russia to help defeated presidential candidate Hillary Clinton prepare for what he thought would be her transition to the White House.
"I have hundreds of friends in Russia. I'm really sorry that these sanctions will make communicating with people harder," McFaul wrote on social media on Saturday.
In a separate earlier post, he described why he thought he had been sanctioned.
