I was watching a doco from Kirk Cameron called "Monumental" that is a warts and all documentary of the founding of America that traces the Pilgrims from the UK and Americas foundation as a Christian nation. Whether you like Cameron or not, its worth seeing.
I was amazed at how of 102 people on the mayflower, 47 died in the first winter, mostly women protecting their kids from the cold by sleeping on them....
I saw this too en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Monument_to_the_Forefathers - surely these days and endangered monument.....
It was great - you got to see how the quest for religious freedom drove the sacrifice to establish a nation of free people.
Australians can sort of relate - Australia is a nation founded on the human misery of the UK, as mostly convicts, but an opportunity to start again. Possibly with a less of a Christian core influence though, as Australia was directly established by the English crown.
It gave a perspective I hadn't seen before, and an appreciation for the Christian values of Amercia, and how screamingly obvious that freedom cant exist without God being a central core of everything.....
