Do you ever sense a cloud of guilt hanging over your head, even though you haven’t done anything specifically wrong? Maybe it’s a vague feeling that you haven’t done enough or don’t quite measure up. Condemnation can make you feel that way. It’s that feeling of being under a sentence of guilt and judgment. Conviction is the Holy Spirit telling you to repent of a wrongdoing. Condemnation is a false accusation against you that doesn’t come from God. Condemnation presses you down. Conviction calls you up higher to Him. When a police car pulled out behind me the other day, I wasn’t guilty, but I felt guilty. My feelings were carried over from long past experiences with police cars behind me. That’s how condemnation hooks us; it draws us back to our past. It attacks our innocence that we have been given in Christ. It can masquerade as a feeling that we always need to do more, that we’re a failure, or that nothing we do is quite good enough. It’s one of the enemy’s big guns. He pulls it out to try and remind us that we don’t deserve the mercy and grace God has given us. We don’t deserve it, but we don’t have to. If we deserved it, then it wouldn’t be mercy and grace! Condemnation is the enemy’s sucker punch to try to knock us down and keep us down. Don’t fall for it. Your life is now operating under a superior law, the law of life in Christ Jesus! “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). When the accusation of condemnation pops into your mind or emotions, meet it head-on with the truth. Confess Rom 8:1 to God and thank Him: “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Thriving: Trusting god for life to the fullest.
I just want to touch on the fact that Condemnation is a false accusation against you that doesn't come from God as some may be mislead by that statement. The accusation may be false, not just because you didn't do or say whatever it is, but because God has already forgiven you. Most of the time we're guilty of the crime and so we don't consider it a false accusation. However, if we have confessed our sin and asked forgiveness, then we can know that we are forgiven completely. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9) Jesus paid for ALL our sins, past, present and future when He was on the cross. When we ask Him for forgiveness after we've been saved, the purpose is more to clear our minds and hearts of guilt and shame rather then give us forgiveness, because the forgiveness was already given, even before we sinned. “let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.” (Hebrews 10:22) and “How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!” (Hebrews 9:14) So don't allow Satan, your flesh or the world succeed in making you feel guilty for sins that have been forgiven. Our Lord Jesus does not want a bunch of sad faced gloomy followers who are wallowing in guilt and shame for their past sins or even a recent sin. He came to free us from all of that! He wants us to have an abundant life; a life of victory in Him. We get that life by being obedient to Him, which includes not letting ourselves get caught in Satan's trap of false condemnation.
“If it could, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.” (Hebrews 10:2)
“Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” (John 3:18)
“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”” (John 8:31–32)
