Iran closer than ever to obtaining a nuclear weapon, former IDF chief says
Eisenkot says Israeli officials guilty of 'fanfare' by advertising involvement in sabotage operations
Iran is dangerously close to acquiring a nuclear weapon, a former Israel Defense Forces (IDF) chief of staff said on Friday, offering an ambiguous assessment of the Washington decision to pull out of the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

“It is evident today that the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the accord and maximum pressure campaign and actions against Iran led to some achievements, yet we can’t deny that Iran today is the closest it has ever been to a nuke since it launched the nuclear program,” Lt.-Gen. (ret.) Gadi Eisenkot said, speaking at a conference at the Peres Center for Peace.
The statement, while carefully hedged, appears to depart from the official Israeli line of support for then-US president Donald Trump's decision to exit the Obama-era accord, which Jerusalem has staunchly opposed.
Likewise, Eisenkot also appeared to be critical of Yossi Cohen, the former head of the Mossad spy agency, and former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu for what he referred to as “irresponsible boastful fanfare" in all but officially confirming that Israel was sabotaging Tehran's nuclear program.
Cohen, who recently ended his five-year tenure as head of Mossad, has signaled that Israel was behind efforts to thwart Iran's nuclear program including blowing up the underground centrifuge facility at Natanz and assassinating top scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.
