This afternoon I received a phone call offering me free money from the US government. "James Wilson", told me I was nominated for a "taxation grant". He spoke in a thick Pakistani accent, I could barely understand. According to him, the government is rewarding people with a large chunk of cash. He said it was to thank me for paying my taxes on time. Obviously, this gentleman was not born here in the USA. If he was, he would know how preposterous that sounds. We don't keep secrets like that. If they were returning our money, it would have been all over the news by now. Everyone would have heard about it. They would still be arguing on foxnews, facebook or editorials in the local paper. When I laughed at what he said, he gave me extensive addresses and badge numbers.
Here's the rub: I was supposed to take $49 in cash and a picture ID to my "Nearest Gov't Location". I asked where that was. A federal building? A post office? A bank? He didn't know. After that, call their number, make a security deposit of my money, then they would "verify my identity" (they meant steal my identity). He finally turned me over to his supervisor, who scolded me for wasting his time. It's possible that they were just hired to do a call center job, unaware of what their bosses were doing. I told him I needed to go check out the "facts" and said good bye.
Next I called my bank . I talked with a very helpful lady named Emily. I had no trouble understanding her. She said it was a scam. That it happens all the time. The victims are only aware after the bank cannot cash the check for the large sum of money.

Good thing you didn't fall for that! Unfortunately there are too many people who do. I find it so hard to comprehend that anyone would fall for a scam so obviously bogus, but people do it anyway.
The truth about the IRS. They pick THOUSANDS of taxpayers and hold their return. They do not send a letter, do not answer the phone, and do NOTHING to get your return to you, even after you go to the local tax office to inquire.
Long after the tax deadline, people slowly start to get through, and some actually get letters (but not all). The answer they get and what the letter is saying is that they were flagged for identity theft and they'd have to go through a question session to prove they are who they say they are. Then they are quoted an additional 6 to 8 weeks, before they will see their money. And no they are not paying interest, when the money is finally sent. And some of them are still fighting for their refunds, from 2012. I know this as fact, from a situation I'm still working on, for someone.
So, therefore, if a call supposedly comes from the US government saying they are giving away money, know that it is so far from the truth, it's sickening!!!

That's right! Thank you for your expert witness. Gov't branches are slow. Any money, even the money that belongs to a taxpayer, gets trapped in bureaucratic red tape. I don't know how they got my number. It is a cell phone. Come to think of it, they called me about a month ago. The man said, I could get a government grant that I never have to pay back. I said "Then who do I have to pay back?" And he hung up. I didn't think of it yesterday when I got the long version. I could report them. Do you know who I should call?

I said "Then who do I have to pay back?" And he hung up. I didn't think of it yesterday when I got the long version. I could report them. Do you know who I should call? They say that you should report phone scams to the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) www.fcc.gov/ They ask a LOT of questions. Exact time, Exact date, caller ID, names of callers, Subject matter, etc. But, that's where you would report it.
Not that it always works, but you can put your phone number(s) on the "Do Not Call" Registry. www.donotcall.gov The thing that doesn't work, are survey companies, and political campaigns. Those two organizations are exempt from the do not call lists. BUT, the survey companies keep their own list, and you can request they remove you from their call list, and if they don't comply, they can be held accountable. If the survey caller hangs up on you, you can call the caller I.D. number and ask for a manager/supervisor and report this and they will then comply with your request.
The other thing that doesn't coincide with the do not call registry, is if you've done business with a company, or have inquired for information. Your number and address are allowed back on the call list, for that company. You have to request they remove you. They also sell it, as we all know, and it's the responsibility of the buyer to check the national registry, before making sales calls. They don't always do that, and it's getting much worse, all the time.

Oh, and coming back to update on the IRS's holding of a 2014 return for my client. They are now getting their return, and is scheduled to be sent on 7-1-15. And I stand corrected. They are also paying interest.
Now, to continue to work on their 2012 return. That is still being held. Unfortunately they DID get a letter way back when, but lost it. And never followed up on it. Fortunately, I do know what this letter was requesting and am working on it.
On another thought.............It just really irks me that an illegal alien can steal your social security number and work a job, inside the United States, but when they file their tax return, they use an IRS issued ID number (ITIN) that allows them to get ALL their withholding returned to them. In meantime, that SS# they stole is flagged for under reporting of income.

I call our local police when I get those calls Catt, because I want to warn others in the community so they'll be aware of it. Hopefully they'll see it in the police logs that are posted in the newspaper each week. Plus, that way the police are aware of it and can take any actions they think are appropriate to protect vulnerable people in their town.

I just couldn't think of anywhere else to report it. And Cindy, you just reminded me of somewhere else too, but calling the local police will cover it, better. But, our local TV, has a "report a phone scam" link on their site. I forgot about that. Ya'll probably have that too, but I like what you suggested better.
