I've been wanting to share this with you for awhile now, but wasn't sure where to put it. See what you think. I want to start with a question. Do we really believe what Jesus says? “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”” (John 11:25–26) That really slapped me in the face when I read it last time, and then I got really excited, because I DO believe Him! But, to be fair, because we think we "obviously" see Christians die daily, I'll share what other teachers say about this verse.
This is the fifth in a series of 7 great “I am” statements of Jesus. With this statement, Jesus moved Martha from an abstract belief in the resurrection that will take place “on the last day” to a personalized trust in Him who alone can raise the dead. No resurrection or eternal life exists outside of the Son of God. Time (“on the last day”) is no barrier to the One who has the power of resurrection and life (John 1:4) for He can give life at any time. The MacArthur study Bible
Ok, I was surprised to find someone else who had learned the same thing I did!
Verses 25 and 26 present the enigma of the Christian promise, death is not death; and even though you may die you really never die. Of course, the answer to this riddle is found in distinguishing between the body and the soul; the former dies but the latter never dies. This teaching, which sounds so improbable and unbelievable to the skeptic, was authenticated by the incontestable miracle of the resurrection of Lazarus. It is noteworthy that this miracle is attested to by Jesus’ enemies (John 12—the plot to kill Lazarus). The Life of Christ
And another:
The Resurrection and the Life of the new Age is present right now because Jesus is the Lord of life (John 1:4). Jesus’ words about life & death are seemingly paradoxical. A believer’s death issues in new life. In fact, the life of a believer is of such a quality that he will never die spiritually. He has eternal life, & the end of physical life is only asleep for his body until the resurrection unto life. At death the spiritual part of a believer, his soul, goes to be with the Lord. The Bible Knowledge Commentary
Having heard what MacArthur teaches about death in a number of different sermons and articles, I know he gets it too. I don't know why he didn't include it in his commentary though. But every time I read what Jesus says, it just makes me want to laugh out loud, because I know something the supposed wisest people in the world have never known but only those to whom my Lord reveals it to! I know without any doubt that because Jesus is the Lord of my life, I will never, ever die! No matter what the doctors say, I will never die! Even when the day comes that someone is standing before a grave that has my name on it, I won't be there, because Like my Jesus, I won't be dead, I'll be ALIVE!
