"The nation’s most radical transgender rights laws have passed the Tasmanian parliament, forcing parents to opt-in if they want to record the sex of their child on a birth certificate.
Labor, the Greens and rebel Liberal speaker Sue Hickey combined late today to pass the controversial laws, despite opposition from the Liberal government and concerns from the solicitor general.
As well as making sex on birth certificates optional, the legislation allows anyone aged 16 or older to change their official gender simply via statutory declaration.
It also broadens Tasmania’s anti-discrimination laws to extend hate speech to cover “gender expression”, including correct use of transgender people’s changed honorifics and names.
As well, critics argue the changes legally allow men to become pregnant and have abortions.
Opponents tonight claimed other states, particularly Victoria and Queensland, were poised to follow with similar changes.
Premier Will Hodgman — whose claim to lead a stable majority government was further damaged by Ms Hickey’s actions — warned the laws were rushed and flawed."
