To start with, you need to spend time in God's Word every single day. I've spoken about this many times and you can read more about it in Your Time With The Lord. I've seen myself that it seems much easier for people to give up their Bible reading when they don't do it in the morning. (Especially if they don't have a routine time set for it.) It usually starts out with just skipping a day here and there, and then it's a couple of days because they're "busy". Eventually though they get in the habit of not reading their Bible and they stop picking it up completely. When that happens, actually when that begins to happen, they begin to backslide, and become defeated in their Christian life, often turning away from God altogether. Those who truly are saved, will be disciplined by the Lord when they don't spend time in His Word daily, but once they give it up, they've often become too hardened to realize what's happening and spend many years in darkness.
It's also important to have a set time of day that you spend in the Bible with the Lord. I've always felt morning was best simply because that way you have set the tone for your day; and you've reminded yourself and family that God is first in your life and that you go to Him for your marching orders for each day. Plus, you've allowed God's Word to renew your mind and strengthen you so you're ready for whatever that day may bring. I can't image not starting my day with the Lord and His Word. Over the years I've read and heard from many Pastors I respect that they too strongly recommend having your Bible reading/study time in the morning.
Fed by the Bread of Life; refreshed by the Water of Life (John 7:37) means victory for the believer in every conflict with the world, the flesh and the devil. If you wait to read His Word until later in the day, those conflicts may have already come, and you won't be as well prepared as you could have been.
God gives us all we need to live a victorious life in Him. Look at this passage carefully: “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” (2 Peter 1:3–4) This makes it quite clear that we need to know His Word to have all we need for our life here. In fact, all through the Bible the Lord makes it very clear that He expects us to know His Word - not just some of it, but all of it, and expects us to spend time in it daily. He uses many pictures to get that across to us, such as likening it to our daily bread. We are actually commanded to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and that can only be done through spending time daily in His Word and prayer. I could continue quoting verses and showing you that this is something we're commanded to do, but it's not going to do much good unless you're willing to allow the Holy Spirit to convict you and help you set up a regular time to study daily. Then, if you do that, you'll find all those many verses for yourself and know you're obeying your Lord. God tells us that His Word will either be a witness for us, or against us. It's up to us.
