In Address to DC Synagogue, Obama Says Anti-Semitism is not a “Passing Fad”
By JNS May 25, 2015
In a rare presidential address at a synagogue, US President Barack Obama spoke at Adas Israel Congregation on Friday in Washington, DC.
Wearing a kippah, Obama touted America’s “unbreakable” bond with Israel, vowed to “block every single path” Iran might take towards developing a nuclear weapon, and called rising anti-Semitism “not some passing fad.”
Echoing his comments that were published a day earlier in The Atlantic, Obama told the congregation that any deal nuclear deal between world powers and Iran “will have my name on it.”
Obama, whose views and policies on Israel are often the source of contentious debates in the Jewish community, said he “came to know Israel as a young man” through “incredible images,” adding that he was inspired by “Israel overcoming these incredible odds.” Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Obama said he understood Israel’s frustrations, calling the Palestinians “not the easiest of partners.”
The president’s speech also covered the rising anti-Semitism around the world, especially in Europe, where attacks on Jewish institutions and individuals have increased dramatically over the past year.

Obama Defends Iran Deal, His Criticism of Israel
Truth Revolt 5.22.2015
In an interview with Jeffrey Goldberg published Thursday, President Obama defended his Middle East foreign policy, insisting that America is "not losing" the war against ISIS, that we can trust the Iran deal because it's got his name on it, and that his repeated criticism of Israel and its PM has been done to protect the "credibility" of the Oval Office. Pressed on his willingness to negotiate with Iran's openly anti-Semitic regime, the president downplayed that as a factor by saying that in history "there were a whole lot of European leaders" that have been anti-Jew too.
When Goldberg pointed to the "anxiety" many American Jews felt about the Iran deal, Obama responded by giving what Goldberg described as "an argument I had not heard him make before": the real reason we should all trust it is that Obama's legacy is on the line.
OBAMA: Look, 20 years from now, I’m still going to be around, God willing. If Iran has a nuclear weapon, it’s my name on this. I think it’s fair to say that in addition to our profound national-security interests, I have a personal interest in locking this down.
(Goldberg actually seemed rather satisfied with that, writing, "The president—the self-confident, self-contained, coolly rational president—appears to have his own anxieties about the nuclear talks. Which isn’t a bad thing.")

Amorality in the Service of Politics: Obama Apologizes for Iranian Anti-Semitism
by Mona Charen May 29, 2015
What to make of President Obama’s interpretation of the Iranian leadership? Challenged by The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg to account for the seeming inconsistency of relying on the rationality of a regime that holds a profoundly anti-Semitic worldview, the president denied that the “venomous anti-Semitism” (his words) of the mullahs is a barrier to rational decision making.
Well the fact that you are anti-Semitic, or racist, doesn’t preclude you from being interested in survival. It doesn’t preclude you from being rational about the need to keep your economy afloat; it doesn’t preclude you from making strategic decisions about how you stay in power; and so the fact that the supreme leader is anti-Semitic doesn’t mean that this overrides all of his other considerations. You know, if you look at the history of anti-Semitism, Jeff, there were a whole lot of European leaders — and there were deep strains of anti-Semitism in this country.
Walter Russell Mead of The American Interest made an important observation:
It seems clear from this exchange that the President either doesn’t understand or flatly disagrees with the point Goldberg has in mind. Goldberg’s point is that serious anti-Semites (that is, people whose worldviews are shaped and informed by Jew hatred as opposed to people who have, for example, a social prejudice against associating with Jews) don’t understand reality the way that other people do. They see a world dominated by Jewish plots and secret cartels, and believe that the Elders of Zion rule the world behind a screen of deception and misdirection.
Exactly. The anti-Semitism of the Iranian regime is not remotely comparable to the prejudice you can still find in America.
