U.S. launches 59 Tomahawk missiles into Syria
The U.S. has launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles aimed at Syria, and they hit the al-Shayrat airfield near Homs at about 8:45 p.m. Eastern Thursday evening.
The missiles hit infrastructure, aircraft and the runway, according to NBC News. A U.S. military official said the munitions were not aimed at people. There have been no reports indicating whether there were any casualties.
The Tomahawk missiles were fired from two U.S. warships, USS Ross and USS Porter, in the Mediterranean Sea.
From his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, President Donald Trump said the U.S. strike on Syria was in the “vital national security interest” of the U.S. more www.wnd.com/2017/04/response-to-syrian-gas-attack-on-drawing-board/

'Missile strikes in Syria a serious blow to US-Russia relations'
David Rosenberg, 07/04/17
The Kremlin blasted US missile strikes Thursday night against a Syrian airbase which Western intelligence officials claim was used as a staging ground for the sarin gas attack outside of Idlib Tuesday which killed as many as 100 people.
Overnight, two US guided missile destroyers fired 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Al Shayrat airbase in Syria.
"A total of 59 [missiles] targeted aircraft, hardened aircraft shelters, petroleum and logistical storage, ammunition supply bunkers, air defense systems, and radars," said Pentagon spokesman Jeff Davis.
Syrian officials claimed Friday that seven people had been killed in the attack, with another nine wounded.
In a formal statement Friday morning, the Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the strikes as an “act of aggression”, and warned that the move damaged US-Russian relations.
"The very presence of US troops and other countries on the territory of Syria…is a gross, obvious and unwarranted violation of international law.”

Israel, NATO powers back US strikes in Syria
Gary Willig, 07/04/17
Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and other government officials expressed their support for US President Donald Trump's decision to launch a series of air strikes in Syria Thursday night.
The USS Porter launched 59 Tomahawk missiles at the Ash Sha'irat air base in Homs province in western Syria. The Syrian planes that carried out a chemical weapons attack this week which drew global condemnation were launched from Ash Sha'irat.
"In both word and action, President Trump sent a strong and clear message today that the use and spread of chemical weapons will not be tolerated. Israel fully supports President Trump's decision and hopes that this message of resolve in the face of the Assad regime's horrific actions will resonate not only in Damascus, but in Tehran, Pyongyang and elsewhere," Prime Minister Netanyahu said following the attack.
Israeli President Reuven Rivlin also expressed his support for the strikes.

With 59 cruise missiles, US sends message to the world: We’re back
By Judah Ari Gross April 7, 2017
After two days of uncertainty from the US administration, following a chemical attack by the Bashar Assad regime, the Americans sent a message to the world on Thursday night in the least subtle way possible: with 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles fired straight at a Syrian air base.
It was a message directed toward Assad and the people of Syria, to allies like Israel and Saudi Arabia, foes like Iran and North Korea, the US’s great frenemy Russia, and to the American public back at home.
Internationally, the 59 Raytheon Co. missiles fired from the USS Ross and USS Porter told American partners — and enemies — that despite the “America First” rhetoric, the US is again very much a factor on the world stage. Domestically, it was a sign that US President Donald Trump, whose administration has seen false-starts, failures and pushback, would take decisive action when he deemed it necessary.

Russia warns of serious consequences from U.S. strike in Syria
By Michelle Nichols, Andrew Osborn and Tom Perry Apr 7, 2017
Russia warned on Friday that U.S. cruise missile strikes on a Syrian air base could have "extremely serious" consequences, as President Donald Trump's first major foray into a foreign conflict opened up a rift between Moscow and Washington. ...
It was Trump's biggest foreign policy decision since taking office in January and the kind of direct intervention in Syria's 6-year-old civil war his predecessor Barack Obama avoided.
The strikes were in reaction to what Washington says was a poison gas attack by the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that killed at least 70 people in rebel-held territory.
They catapulted Washington into confrontation with Russia, which has advisers on the ground aiding its close ally Assad.
"We strongly condemn the illegitimate actions by the U.S. The consequences of this for regional and international stability could be extremely serious,” Russia's deputy U.N. envoy, Vladimir Safronkov, told a meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Friday.

'Trump erased Obama's failure'
Eitan Gilboa, 08/04/17
In an article published on Israel Hayom's Hebrew website, Professor Eitan Gilboa said US President Donald Turmp is changing America's foreign and security policy, especially when it comes to weapons of mass destruction:
Trump said he would not tolerate the use of chemical weapons - and he didn't sit idly by when they were used.
Unlike his predecessor, Barack Obama - who made promises and then failed to fulfill them.
Trump has erased Obama's failure, and set a new red line limiting the use of WMDs anywhere in the world. ...
The US attack was smart, fast, logical, and focused. It punished the site where the chemical weapons were launched from. Apparently, it was the result of efficient decision making, and the decision included several high-ranking and experienced generals. Despite the anti-Trump crowd's complaints that Trump acts hastily, this military strike was very well planned and careful.
Trump sent a clear message to the international community in general, and to the Middle East in particular. Unlike Obama, who did not act as a leader of the free world, Trump did right and made order in the international community. Obama left Syria to the dogs, and the Middle East to Russia and Iran. Trump is changing that policy.

Iran's Middle-East Enemies 'Ecstatic' Over Trump's Syrian Attack
By JNI Media April 9, 2017
It was interesting to note this weekend which Arab states supported the US missile attack on Syria and which condemned it. As it turned out, the support of Arab governments for the US move had to do with their position vis-à-vis Iran – although none of them mentioned the Islamic Republic by name.
Naturally, Iran itself was irate at the attack. First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri condemned it, arguing that such behavior will “certainly pave the way for reinforcing extremism in the region.” And the Chief of staff of Iran’s Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri, speaking to his Russian counterpart General Valery Gerasimov on Saturday, also condemned the US operation against Syria, calling it a decisive violation against an independent state
But Iran’s neighbors, near and far, were ecstatic about the attack and made sure to tell the leader of the free world.

Syria is a showdown between Trump and Putin over who is the dominant power in the Mideast. [Interview with CBN News.]
Joel C. Rosenberg April 8, 2017
(Washington, D.C.) — Yesterday was the last full day of my five-week book tour. I must say it was sobering to finish by discussing Syrian sarin gas attacks and an American President’s response to such attacks, given how central these issues are to the trilogy.
The pictures were sickening, as was the casualty count. “Eighty-six people including at least 27 children died in Khan Sheikhun in an attack the United States has blamed on Syrian President Bashar Assad,” reports a French news network, noting that the U.S. is publicly signaling more attacks could be necessary.
I was interviewed on Fox News and CBN News about the President’s decision to order airstrikes against Syria, particularly noteworthy given that President Obama never ordered a military response in Syria in six years despite repeated chemical weapons attacks against civilians. As soon as we get the video from Fox, I’ll post it.
Here is the online story that CBN News posted — I hope you’ll also take a moment to read it and watch the expanded video clip (which lasts 4:36 minutes) as I explain why it was so important for President Trump to do what he did.
Let me just add that President Trump urgently needs to determine and then explain American national security interests in Syria, his goals for protecting U.S. interests, and then work closely with his national security advisors to develop a realistic game plan. American must not be lured into trying to fix a horrific civil war. Syria is imploding. Washington can’t stop that. But the U.S. also must not allow terror states to use weapons of mass destruction with impunity, nor let the Russians and Iranians set up a new terror base camp on Israel’s northeastern borders.

4 Biblical Imperatives After the Missile Strike in Syria
Jim Denison 4/7/2017
...This is the first direct military action the U.S. has taken against the al-Assad regime. Syria's six-year civil war has claimed more than 400,000 lives, displaced six million people internally and caused five million Syrians to flee the country. It appears that the attack was a warning rather than the beginning of a major intervention since the US targeted only one base. Also, U.S. missiles did not target Syrian surface-to-air missile sites, indicating that the strikes were not preparation for larger fixed-wing airstrikes.
What is a biblical response to this news? Consider four imperatives.
One: Defend those who cannot defend themselves. Sen. Ben Sasse: "The use of chemical weapons cannot become normal—civilized people cannot grow indifferent to such suffering." God's Word agrees: "Defend the poor and fatherless; vindicate the afflicted and needy. Grant escape to the abused and the destitute, pluck them out of the hand of the false" (Ps. 82:3-4).
Two: Seek justice for those who oppress the innocent. The images of the Syrian gas attack have horrified the world. Sen. Marco Rubio tweeted last night, "Though be assured, the wicked will not go unpunished" (Prov. 11:21). God's Word instructs us to "seek justice, relieve the oppressed; judge the fatherless, plead for the widow" (Is. 1:17).
Three: Pray for our leaders and military. We are told to intercede for "all who are in authority" (1 Tim. 2:2). Our political leaders need divine wisdom; those who serve in our military deserve our intercession and support.
Four: Ask God how he wants you to respond personally. In Matthew 9, Jesus asked his disciples to "pray to the Lord of the harvest, that He will send out laborers into His harvest" (v. 38). The next verse shows how they helped answer their prayer: "He called His twelve disciples to Him and gave them authority over unclean spirits ... These twelve Jesus sent out" (Matt. 10:1, 5).

Assad says chemical attack ‘100 percent fabrication’
By AFP April 13, 2017
DAMASCUS — Syria’s President Bashar Assad said a suspected chemical weapons attack was a “fabrication” to justify a US strike on his forces, in an exclusive interview with AFP in Damascus.
Assad, whose country has been ravaged by six years of civil war, said his firepower had not been affected by the attack ordered by US President Donald Trump, but acknowledged further strikes were possible.
Assad insisted his forces had turned over all their chemical weapons stocks years ago and would never use the banned arms.
The interview on Wednesday was his first since a suspected chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of civilians in the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun.
“Definitely, 100 percent for us, it’s fabrication,” he said of the incident.

Russia, Syria & Iran demand no further US strikes on Syria – foreign ministers
14 Apr, 2017 RTNews
The US cruise missile attack on Syria was an act of international aggression, Russia, Syria and Iran have stated after a meeting of their foreign ministers in Moscow.
“We have reiterated our position and were united in stating that the attack was an act of aggression, which blatantly violated the principles of international law and the UN Charter,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.
“We call on the US and its allies to respect Syria’s sovereignty and refrain from actions similar to what happened on April 7, and which have serious ramification not only for regional, but also global security,” he added.

Russia, Iran bid to sideline Syria gas attack findings with fresh probe
By JO BIDDLE April 20, 2017
THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AFP) — The governing body of the global chemical arms watchdog will vote Thursday on a controversial Russian-Iranian move to set up a new team to probe a suspected chemical attack in Syria, sources told AFP.
The draft decision, seen by AFP, calls for an investigation by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) “to establish whether chemical weapons were used in Khan Sheikhoun and how they were delivered to the site of the reported incident” — even though an official probe is already underway.
It also calls for investigators to visit the Shayrat airbase — bombed by the United States after the April 4 attack — to “verify allegations concerning the storage of chemical weapons” there.
The move comes as OPCW head Ahmet Uzumcu said Wednesday that “incontrovertible” test results by the OPCW team already probing the incident had shown sarin gas or a similar substance were used in the attack.

In Fear of Future US Action, Syria Moves Planes Next to Russians
By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz April 20, 2017
“Blessed be Hashem my Rock, who traineth my hands for war, and my fingers for battle.” Psalms 144:1
In the wake of a US missile strike that seriously crippled its air-force,Syria is moving its remaining planes to an airfield adjacent to a Russian airbase. Despite rising tensions with Russia, the US remains committed to preventing further chemical attacks by the Syrian government.
Two defense officials told CNN the Syrian military began moving its aircraft to the air base at Bassel Al-Assad International Airport shortly after the US missile strike on the Sharat air base on April 6. The airport adjacent to the Khmeimim Air Base, formerly a Syrian airbase but currently most of Russia’s air assets are located there. The Russian base is protected by advanced anti-aircraft systems which would presumably offer protection to the nearby Syrian airbase, making the US reluctant to initiate another strike.
The US used 59 Tomahawk missiles to destroy 24 warplanes in the attack, which is estimated to be 20 percent of Syria’s fixed wing aircraft.
“The Syrian Air Force is not in good shape. It’s been worn down by years of combat plus some … significant maintenance problems,” Secretary of Defense General James Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon on Wednesday.
