Syrian army has collapsed after deadly battles to foil group's offensive, according to monitoring group and activists.
Fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) have taken full control of Syria's ancient town of Palmyra, according to activists and a monitoring group.
The Syrian army has collapsed and ISIL has taken over the city of Palmyra, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
The monitor reported earlier on Wednesday that ISIL had advanced into the ancient city of Palmyra.
Deadly clashes had raged overnight between the Syrian government and ISIL, with troops firing rockets from outside the city in an attempt to block ISIL's offensive.
ISIL launched an attack on Palmyra last week, causing material damage to residential areas while clashes left many dead and injured.
They managed to capture two gas fields, leaving h

‘Birthplace of civilization,’ Palmyra faces final ruin by jihadists
By AFP May 21, 2015
The destruction of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Palmyra would be an “enormous loss to humanity,” the head of the organization warned Thursday, after Islamic State fighters seized the ancient Syrian city and archaeological site.
“Palmyra is an extraordinary World Heritage site in the desert and any destruction to Palmyra (would be) not just a war crime but … an enormous loss to humanity,” said Irina Bokova in a video published by the Paris-based group.
She added that she was “extremely worried” about recent events there and reiterated an appeal for an immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of military forces.
“At the end of the day, it’s the birthplace of human civilization. It belongs to the whole of humanity and I think everyone today should be worried about what is happening,” added the UNESCO chief.
Earlier Thursday, Islamic State group jihadists seized full control of the city, putting the world heritage site and its priceless artifacts at risk of destruction.

Stay classy ISIS stay classy yeah they nailing Palmyra There's nothing classy about Islamic State, Kelly. It's quite disturbing how UNESCO seems more concerned about heritage sites than they are of the evil, brutality, war crimes, etc. of Islamic State's mass murdering, slavery and terror. To call for a cease-fire just to save the heritage sites as a priority is outrageous.

Islamic State Takes Syria’s Palmyra, Beheads/Executes 17 people, “ISIS is ‘everywhere'”
Pamela Geller.com
Islamic State on Thursday solidified their rout of Syrian government forces in the historic desert city of Palmyra, moving to the outskirts to seize its airport and the notorious Tadmur Prison, according to residents and statements from the group.
It was the first time that the Islamic State had seized an entire city from Syrian government forces; it won control of its first major city, Raqqa, from Syrian insurgents and the Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front after the two became rivals. (NYT)
ISIS is “everywhere” in Syria’s ancient city of Palmyra.
But no worries. Obama says we’re winning.
Beirut (AFP) – Fighters from the Islamic State group executed at least 17 people, including civilians, after the jihadists seized Syria’s ancient city of Palmyra on Thursday, a monitor said.
“IS executed 17 people, including civilians and loyalist fighters. At least four of them were beheaded,” Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group, told AFP.
He said the civilians were working for a local administrative council, while the fighters included at least one regime soldier and members of the National Defence Forces, a pro-government militia.
“They were accused of working with the regime,” Abdel Rahman said.

'Ditch double standards!' Russia seeks united anti-ISIS front after Palmyra massacre
May 26, 2015 / RTNews
Moscow has condemned the massacre of civilians in the ancient city of Palmyra, urging the international community to denounce double standards in its approach to fighting terrorists, and unite against IS (Islamic State, formerly ISIS/ISIL) aggression.
“We strongly condemn the atrocities committed by armed extremists in Palmyra,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“Once again, we urge international and regional parties to abandon the vicious practice of using double standard approaches to fighting against terrorism, and launch efficient cooperation with the governments of Middle East countries, which are directly repelling the ISIS offensive,” the ministry said.
Moscow believes that US-led airstrike campaign against Islamic State positions in Iraq and Syria have not done enough to impede the jihadists’ advance in the two Middle Eastern states.
“Despite efforts taken by the so-called anti-terrorist coalition led by the United States, the Islamic State is acting ever more actively and stops at nothing to reach its goal – establish a trans-border 'caliphate' on a vast area from Damascus to Baghdad.”
The ministry believes that recent gains by the militants in Syria, and the brutal executions of civilians that followed, demonstrate the ineffectiveness of the coalition’s approach.
