Iran tests cruise missile with nuclear capability
02/02/17
The German newspaper Die Welt reported Thursday, citing unspecified intelligence sources, that Iran has tested a cruise missile called "Sumar" that is capable of carrying nuclear weapons in addition to test-firing a medium-range ballistic missile on Sunday.
The newspaper said that the Sumar cruise missile was built in Iran and traveled around 600 km in its first known successful test. The missile is believed to be capable of carrying nuclear weapons and may have a range of 2,000 to 3,000 km, the paper said, citing intelligence sources.
Cruise missiles are harder to counter than ballistic missiles since they fly at lower altitudes and can evade enemy radar, confounding missile defense missiles and hitting targets deep inside an opponent's territory.
But the biggest advantage from Iran's point of view is that cruise missiles are not mentioned in any United Nations resolutions that ban work on ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

Trump says Iran 'put on notice' for missile firing
Arutz Sheva Staff, 02/02/17
Donald Trump tweeted that Iran has been formally warned by the US for firing a ballistic missile over the weekend. Trump repeatedly criticized the Iranian nuclear agreement during the course of his campaign, saying that he would "tear up" the deal if he became president.
Trump wrote that "Iran was on its last legs and ready to collapse until the U.S. came along and gave it a life-line in the form of the Iran Deal: $150 billion.

Trump puts Iran ‘on notice,’ denounces ‘terrible’ nuclear deal
By AFP and Times of Israel staff February 2, 2017
US President Donald Trump on Thursday said Iran was now formally “on notice” after a recent missile test, while also claiming the Islamic Republic was on the brink of collapse when it signed an international nuclear deal.
“Iran has been formally PUT ON NOTICE for firing a ballistic missile. Should have been thankful for the terrible deal the US made with them!” Trump tweeted, echoing similar comments by National Security Advisor Michael Flynn the day before.
But there has been scant detail from the White House as to what the warning actually means in practical terms. It remains to be seen if the White House will push for sanctions this time around.
Flynn insisted that Sunday’s missile test was “in defiance of UN Security Council Resolution 2231,” which calls on Iran not to test missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapon.

Angry White House puts Iran ‘on notice’ over ballistic missile tests
By Eric Cortellessa February 1, 2017
WASHINGTON — The Trump administration issued a stern yet ambiguous warning to Iran on Wednesday for testing ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads and after Iran-supported Houthi rebels attacked a Saudi naval vessel. Taking the podium at a White House press briefing, National Security Adviser Michael Flynn read a statement that declared the United States was “officially putting Iran on notice.”
Asked to clarify exactly what that meant, White House press secretary Sean Spicer did not give a detailed explanation, but told reporters the US wanted to send a message that Tehran could not engage in these activities without eliciting an American response.
“We wanted to be very clear that we felt their actions were both provocative and in violation,” Spicer said, “and making sure that they understood that we were weren’t going to sit by and not act on those actions.”

Defiant Iran test-fires another missile days after US warning
By Times of Israel staff February 9, 2017
Iran has reportedly test-fired another missile on Wednesday, just days after a series of warnings from the Trump administration that it was “on notice” for previous ballistic missile tests and that a military response to such actions was under consideration.
According to a Fox News report, a US official said the test on Wednesday was of a short-range surface-to-air missile, called Mersad, which impacted 56-kilometer (35 miles) away.
The test came on the same day US officials told Reuters that the White House was considering a proposal that could lead to naming Iran’s most powerful military and political institution, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, as a terrorist organization.
The proposal is reportedly one of many being weighed as part of an overall Iran policy review, amid a tougher line on Tehran since the Trump administration came into office.

Iran is testing the Trump administration. Iran knows that they are backed by Russia and Russia is backed by China.
