shooter wearing a Star Wars T-shirt opened fire at the baggage carousel at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Friday, killing at least five people before being taken into custody, officials and witnesses said.
Five people died and eight more were wounded in the incident, the local sheriff's office said.
The shooter, who said nothing, appeared to be a man in his 20s wearing a Star Wars T-shirt who was shot by police as he attempted to reload, MSNBC reported, citing witnesses.
John Schlicher, who told MSNBC he saw the attack, described the shooter as a "slender man" who was "directly firing at us" while passengers waited for their bags to come off the carousel.

(KABC) -- At least five people are dead and eight others are hospitalized after a gunman opened fire at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Friday, according to officials. The suspect is in custody. At least five people were killed in the gunfire, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office. Thirteen people were shot and eight of them were transported to an area hospital, according to Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel. The senior federal official told ABC News the gunman was taken into custody without incident. Sheriff's officials said they believe he acted alone. The gunman was wearing a uniform and a military ID with the name Esteban Santiago, a 26-year-old man born in New Jersey. Esteban Santiago, 26, was a private first class and combat engineer who joined the Alaska Army National Guard in November 2014 after serving in Iraq with the Puerto Rico National Guard. Santiago was a member of the Headquarters and Headquarters Trooper, 297th Cavalry in Fairbanks.
