I hear this a lot and it's so not true. Think of someone in Auschwitz, or someone who's just lost a loved one, or who's awakened from a coma to discover that they have no legs anymore. Think of some of the things that have happened to you as well. Of course He gives us more than we can handle, He does it all the time! His whole plan is to grow us up into the image of Christ. Do we think it was easy for the Lord to go to the cross? Could we do it? God gives us more than we can handle so that we'll learn to rely on Him instead of ourselves. That's the whole point.
This saying originally came from someone's take on what Paul said about temptation: “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13) As you can see they took what Paul said out of context and twisted it. All through the Old and New Testaments we see God giving people more than they can handle so He can grow them up to be like Jesus. Think of Paul and all he went through. He begged God to take away the thorn in his flesh, which was something he couldn't stand anymore. What was God's reply? “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:9–10)
In another place Paul tells us: “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” (2 Corinthians 4:7–9) The reason we're not crushed, or in despair or not abandoned or destroyed is because we rely on God, not because we can handle whatever is thrown at us. We are never told to be strong in ourselves, to suck it up and just do it. Instead we're told to rely on God's strength. “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” (Ephesians 6:10) In fact, those who trust in themselves and their own ability to handle things are called fools in the Bible!
This saying is very much like the other lie that says, "God Helps Those Who Help Themselves" which we've already spoken about here: fresh-hope.com/thread/1861/god-helps-who-help
Since they are so similar, you might want to check that one out as well as a reminder. We see both of these a lot on social media. Please let people know they're not true so that baby Christians won't be misled and possibly lose their faith!
