What to Make of Erdogan's Proposal for a 'Turkish-Iranian-Russian Alliance'
Sputnik News 21.07.2016
In a telephone conversation with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his willingness to cooperate closely with Iran and Russia "to settle regional crises and restore peace and stability to the region." But what do Russian political analysts make of the Turkish leader's proposals?
As expected, the main topic of discussion between the Iranian and Turkish leaders during Tuesday's phone call was the failed military coup attempt that rocked Ankara on Friday night. Rouhani emphasized that Iran welcomed the return of stability in Turkey, and praised "the great maturity of the Turkish people, who showed during this coup attempt that strong-arm tactics have no place in our region."
But the two leaders also touched on the situation in the Middle East as a whole, and seem to have come to a consensus that there are global forces who are not satisfied with the idea of tranquility in the region. For his part, President Rouhani noted he has no doubt that together with the terrorists, there are also "some superpowers" trying to destabilize things. ...
Tarasov, the director of the Middle East-Causasus Research Center, indicated that this may very well be a genuine attempt by Erdogan to try and shift his country's foreign policy vector.
The first inkling of that shift was witnessed before the coup, when Ankara initiated moves for a rapid rapprochement with both Israel and Russia.
"After that, a strange series of events occurred," Tarasov noted. "A terror attack struck the international airport in Istanbul. Then, information appeared about a planned meeting between Erdogan and the Russian president, possibly at the G20 forum in China. Then the schedule was changed, and suddenly, there was this incomprehensible and completely inconsistent coup attempt."

Turkey considering military ties with Russia as NATO shows unwillingness to cooperate – Ankara
18 Aug, 2016 RTNews
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has lashed out at NATO, saying the alliance is not fully cooperating with Ankara. In an interview with Sputnik, he hinted that Turkey would consider military cooperation with Russia.
Cavusoglu says that Ankara has become alarmed at the lack of willingness shown by NATO to cooperate with Turkey, which is a member of the alliance.
"It seems to us that NATO members behave in an evasive fashion on issues such as the exchange of technology and joint investments. Turkey intends to develop its own defense industry and strengthen its defense system,” he said in an interview with Sputnik.
“In this sense, if Russia were to treat this with interest, we are ready to consider the possibility of cooperation in this sector," Cavusoglu said when asked about the possibility of working with Russia in the defense sphere.
It is Cavusoglu’s strongest rebuke of NATO to date. In an interview with the Anadolu news agency on August 10, he said that Turkey and Russia would look to establish a joint military, intelligence, and diplomatic mechanism, while adding that relations with NATO were not as satisfactory as he would have wished.

The Russian Strategic Quadrangle: Russia, Iran, Turkey and Radical Islam Team Up to Thwart the United States
By Harry G. Hutchison
Alarming and disturbing news is materializing in the wake of Vladimir Putin’s latest challenge to U. S. dominance in the Persian Gulf and Middle East.
This news should concern all Americans.
The Washington Times reports that the Russian President continues to outflank Washington. Just this past week, Russia launched bombers from a new base—Iran—thus enabling Putin to strike more quickly with heavier bombardments against U.S.-backed rebels.
At the same time, despite the fact that Turkey shot down a Russian jet that had strayed into Turkish airspace late last year, the record shows that Turkey is beginning to work with Russia and Iran. If this arrangement expands, it threatens the U.S. and the world with a new alliance originating out of three countries that have long competed for influence in the region.
A number of distinguished commentators, including Bret Stephens of the Wall Street Journal, warn that this move forecasts the emergence of a New Dictators’ Club. Ominously, this club echoes events that took place during the 1930s and 1940s when the governments of Japan, Italy and Germany—bitter enemies in World War I—pledged mutual support. Within a short period of time—five years—70 million people would be killed as a result of an authoritarian effort to build a brave new world. Stephens asks: “Would Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan forfeit a U.S. alliance for the sake of a condominium with Russia, his country’s historic enemy?” It appears that the early answer is an affirmative one as Turkey, after embracing more authoritarian policies, has recently softened its opposition toward Syria’s leader Bashir al-Assad, who is a friend of both Russia and Iran.
Recent evidence—including Russia’s proposal to conduct joint naval exercises with the Chinese navy that would encroach on Japan’s territorial waters—indicates that China may demand entry into this new club. All the more reason why Americans who are interested in national security and global stability should be alarmed at the decline of U.S. influence and the corresponding expansion of Russia’s military power in the world. The startling reordering of the Middle East is supported by Russia and financed by the release of funds to Iran as a result of the Iran nuclear deal. This reordering proceeds apace despite the loss of thousands of American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade and a half, and the continuing spate of terror attacks by ISIS in Europe, the United States and Africa that produce victims virtually every day.

Check mate? Russia continues to stack up military & diplomatic wins in Middle East
8 Sep, 2016 RTNews
Successful Syria gamble
Russia’s military intervention in Syria on behalf of the Syrian government has been limited and calculated. Moscow achieved a number of its major aims fairly quickly: The intervention provided the impetus for a massive diplomatic shakeup and allowed Russia to demonstrate that it is a modern military power capable of turning the tide in a complex conflict which affects its national interests...
Normalization of relations with Turkey
When Turkey shot down a Russian military jet last winter after it allegedly crossed into Turkish airspace for a mere 17 seconds (a claim disputed by Russia), that looked like the abrupt end of any sort of civilized relations between Moscow and Ankara.
The spat became intensely personal, with Putin accusing Erdogan of stabbing Russia in the back. Russia then accused Turkey of aiding ISIS and Erdogan personally of profiting off illegal ISIS oil trade. Relations between the two countries frankly could not have been any worse. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Erdogan sent a letter apologizing to Russia over the incident and expressing a desire for the normalization of relations. Putin accepted the apology...
Broader alliance with Iran
Then there’s Russia’s relationship with Iran, which has been a rocky one in both distant and recent history. When Russia stopped the sale of its S-300 missile defense systems to Iran in 2010 under Western pressure and supported UN sanctions on the country over its nuclear program, good relations temporarily unraveled. Much has changed since then, that issue has since been settled, and Moscow and Tehran now appear to be seeking out a deeper and broader relationship...
Israel-Palestine peace talks
Perhaps most interesting is Russia’s emergence as a possible host for peace talks between Israel and Palestine. According to the latest reports, proposed talks in Moscow between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will go ahead “in principle” — at an unspecified date.
That Russia has found itself in a position to host talks can be counted as another tick in its favor in terms of its image in the region. This comes after vigorous Russian efforts to reach a diplomatic solution in Syria with the US, as well as the key role played by Moscow in talks over the recent Iran nuclear deal...

When Radical Islam and Russia Meet: The Unholy Alliance
By Jay Sekulow
Radical Islam and Russia are converging in a deadly and dangerous unholy alliance. In my upcoming new book (due out September 20th), “Unholy Alliance: The Agenda Iran, Russia, and Jihadists Share for Conquering the World,” I uncover some of these dangerous trends and detail solutions that our nation’s leaders must take. This continues the in-depth analysis of radical Islam we began in #1 New York Times Bestseller “Rise of ISIS: A Threat We Can’t Ignore.”
A change has recently occurred in U.S. policy toward the Middle East, as we have begun to withdraw from the region under President Obama. According to Ryan Crocker, dean and executive professor of the Bush School of Government & Public Service at Texas A&M University and a former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Pakistan, we are now seeing “the lowest ebb since World War II for U.S. influence and engagement in the region.”
The United States has substantially withdrawn its troops from Iraq and Afghanistan and has, for the most part, chosen not to involve itself in the civil war raging in Syria, due to the Obama Administration’s foreign policy decisions. This departure has created a vacuum in the Middle East, a void waiting to be filled by some other country.
Our enemies no longer fear us and our allies don’t trust us.
Power abhors a vacuum. As Crocker explains, “f you look at the heart of the Middle East, where the U.S. once was, we are now gone—and in our place, we have Iran, Iran’s Shiite proxies [e.g., Hezbollah], Islamic State [i.e., ISIS] and the Russians.”
Strangely, some Muslim sects that normally war with one another are even joining forces in some of these unlikely alliances.

Beware the Unholy Alliance: Russia is Working with Radical Islam to Undermine the West
By Jay Sekulow September 20, 2016 FoxNews.com
The world scene is changing, and not for the better. In recent weeks, Iran and Russia – two countries that exploit perceived weakness – have repeatedly flexed their muscles against the U.S. military – both in the air and on the sea. The brazen and threatening actions aimed at our military are designed to do one thing – intimidate the United States.
In addition to the provocative actions of Iran and Russia, we are constantly reminded of the growing threats of the Islamic State (ISIS) – radical jihadist terrorists pledging to destroy America and our way of life.
A change has recently occurred in U.S. policy toward the Middle East, as we have begun to withdraw from the region under President Obama.
The U.S. has substantially withdrawn its troops from Iraq and Afghanistan and has, for the most part, chosen not to involve itself in the civil war raging in Syria, due to the Obama administration’s foreign policy decisions. This departure has created a vacuum in the Middle East, a void waiting to be filled by some other country.
President Obama has consistently failed to name our enemy. He desires to create a modern international community based on mutual respect, international security, and global prosperity.
This is a false narrative, plain and simple. How can these things be achieved when the United States faces a serious security threat? Only after we understand the true nature of the enemy we are facing will we be in a position to effectively combat it.
What we are now seeing is the formation of a truly unholy alliance. Enemies of the West – including Russia, Syria, Iran, the Islamic State, and others – are working together – even if they are traditional enemies themselves such as Shiite and Sunni Muslims, or Russia and Iran – in order to destabilize the world and seize power for themselves.

Turkey, Russia Vow Cooperation after Ambassador’s Killing
by Breitbart Jerusalem 20 Dec 2016
...On Tuesday, the foreign ministers of Russia and Turkey attended a previously scheduled meeting in Moscow, where they said they were committed to advancing peace efforts in Syria.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Turkey and Russia would work together to determine who was behind the “heinous terror attack” against Karlov, who was killed in front of a stunned audience while making remarks at a photo exhibition in Ankara.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was hosting Cavusoglu as well as the foreign minister of Iran for a meeting to discuss the Syrian crisis. Top Turkish, Russian and Iranian defense officials were also meeting. Russia and Iran have backed the government of Bashar Assad, while Turkey has supported rebels fighting Assad.
“Turkey and Russia have shown the world what they can achieve when they cooperate,” Cavusoglu said in at the start of the meeting with Lavrov. He was referring to a Turkish- and Russian-brokered peace deal that paved the way for the evacuation of thousands of people from the east of embattled Aleppo.
The presidents of Russia and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, agreed that the killing of the Russian ambassador “makes us more decisive in fighting terrorism and makes today’s meeting even more important,” Lavrov said.

Russia-Iran-Turkey alliance most effective in solving Syrian crisis – Lavrov
20 Dec, 2016 RTNews
Trilateral cooperation between Russia, Iran, and Turkey is the most effective way to settle the Syrian crisis, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, adding that Moscow, Teheran, and Ankara have drafted a document aiming to resolve the crisis.
Russia’s foreign minister held a meeting in Moscow with his counterparts, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu of Turkey and Mohammad Javad Zarif of Iran, in Moscow on Tuesday.
“The most effective format is the one that you are witnessing today. This is not an attempt to cast a shadow on the attempts of our partners; this is just statement of a fact,” Lavrov said at a briefing after the meeting.

Turkey, Russia and Iran leaders to discuss Syria in Istanbul: Turkish source
Reuters Staff
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan discussed the meeting in two phone calls on Wednesday with the Russian and Iranian presidents, the source said. The date of the summit would be set in coming weeks.
The three countries have worked together in recent months to try to reduce violence in Syria, even though they have backed rival sides in the nearly seven-year civil war and remain deeply involved in the conflict.
Iran-backed militias and Russian air power have supported a Syrian army offensive in Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib since November, and Turkish forces last month launched an offensive in northern Syria’s Kurdish region of Afrin.

ANALYSIS: Developments show Syrian war could escalate into WWIII
Yochanan Visser, 15/03/18
Watching unfolding events in Syria over the past week one could be reminded of a famous ancient Midrash by Rabbi Yitzchak which predicted events prior to the redemption of the world.
“The kings of the nations of the world will provoke each other. The king of Persia (today’s ‘Iran’) will threaten the king of Arabia (today called ‘Saudi Arabia’) and because of this the king of Arabia will go to the king of Edom (Edom refers to the Christian world i.e. Europe and the USA) for advice,” Rabbi Yitzchak said almost 2,000 years ago.
While in southern Israel hundreds of U.S. marines joined the IDF in a large scale drill that was conducted in preparation for a three-front missile war and sirens wailed during a nationwide Home Front exercise, the latest dramatic events in Syria could lead to a world war, warn insiders and some ofthe parties in the conflict.
Reacting to the news that the US armed forces in Syria are building new bases east of the Euphrates River, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the establishment of these bases could lead to World War III.
"The question arises, why the US military bases in Syria are needed, and it seems that these bases are directed against Russia and Iran," the Turkish dictator charged.
At the same time the Turkish dictator again threatened to invade parts of northern Iraq and brought his country one step closer to war with Greece over a dispute about several islands in the Aegean Sea which once were part of the Ottoman Empire.
In France, former prime minister Francois Hollande called for war over Russia’s and Turkey’s meddling in the now seven-year-old Syrian conflict.
After explaining that what is at stake in Syria is not the survival of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad but the “world order,” Hollande wrote that the issue is Russia's growing influence in the Middle East.
“The issue is how to respond to Vladimir Putin, not so much how to respond to Bashar al-Assad. … The West must realize the true scope of the danger,” Hollande warned.

Echos Of Ezekiel 38 - Tehran To Plot Strategy With Russia & Turkey
By Ben Cohen/Algemeiner.com
August 20, 2018
Russia's presidential office has announced that President Vladimir Putin will fly to Tehran in early September for a summit meeting with his Turkish and Iranian counterparts.
The exact date for the summit would be released once "the three presidents' schedules are agreed on through diplomatic channels," Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.
In a separate briefing, Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said the parley would be held in the first week of September.
The talks between Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will focus on the war in Syria, although growing US economic pressure on both the Turkish and Iranian governments is likely to be discussed.
In Iran's case, the US aims to have a full range of punishing sanctions in place by Nov. 4, including a ban on transactions with Iran's central bank, while in the case of Turkey -- which continues to hold the American pastor Andrew Brunson in prison -- the US has sanctioned two senior government ministers and placed new tariffs on imports in recent weeks.
