Turkish army seizes power from government
Ben Ariel, Canada, 15/07/16
The Turkish military announced on Friday night that it had taken over power from the government “in the name of democratic order”.
"The power in the country has been seized in its entirety," said the military statement read on local NTV and quoted by Sky News.
An announcer on Turkey's state broadcaster TRT subsequently read out a live statement, reportedly on the orders of the military, saying the country is now being run by a "peace council".
According to Sky News, state TV has been stormed by the military and staff have been asked to hand in their mobile phones.
A Turkish state news agency reported that a top general is among several people being "held hostage" at the military headquarters in Ankara.
As well, NTV showed footage of tanks at the entrance to Istanbul's Ataturk airport. It reported that all flights have been cancelled in and out of the airport.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan responded to the coup late Friday night, saying the coup was "an attempt at an uprising by a minority within our armed forces".
Erdogan, whose whereabouts are unknown and who was speaking to CNN Turk by cellphone, called on people to take to the streets, saying, "We will overcome this."
"I have never recognized any power above the will of the people",” he added.

Coup d'not: Turkish military mutiny crumbles
Updated: 07/16/2016
A Turkish military group claimed it had taken control of Turkey’s government Friday evening, but by Saturday morning, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim alleged the coup attempt had been foiled.
However, the military group retained control of some strategic locations in the capital Ankara Saturday morning where fighting continued.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived at the Istanbul Ataturk Airport early Saturday morning after the government regained control of the site, and large crowds greeted him there.
“The coup attempt is foiled,” Turkey’s national intelligence agency said, according to Al Jazeera.
A senior Turk official also told the Associated Press the attempted coup had been repelled. The unnamed source said government officials remained in command of their offices.
Early Saturday morning CNN reported soldiers who occupied tanks on the Bosphorus Bridge were seen emerging with their hands raised.
At least 60 people are reported dead in the attempted overnight uprising, and 754 members of the armed forces have been detained in connection with the attempted coup, reported the state news agency Anadolu.
Before he arrived in Istanbul, Erdogan, using his iPhone, appeared on Facetime Friday evening and insisted to Turkey, “I am president.”
“This country can’t be managed from Pennsylvania,” Erdogan said, linking the coup attempt to U.S.-based exiled imam Fethullah Gülen. (Gülen has links to the Clintons, according to the Daily Caller.)

‘Situation under control,’ Turkish PM says after foiled, deadly coup bid
By Fulya Ozerkan, Stuart Williams and Caroline Henshaw July 16, 2016
ANKARA, Turkey (AFP) — Turkish authorities said they had regained control of the country on Saturday after thwarting an attempt by discontented soldiers to seize power from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that claimed more than 250 lives.
After the bloodiest challenge to his 13-year autocratic rule, Erdogan urged his backers to stay on the streets to prevent a possible “flare-up” of Friday’s chaos in the strategic NATO member of 80 million people.
With at least 2,839 soldiers already detained in a relentless round-up over the coup plot, the authorities blamed the conspiracy on Erdogan’s arch enemy, the US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen.
“The situation is completely under control,” Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said outside his Ankara offices, flanked by Turkey’s top general who had himself been taken hostage by the plotters.
Describing the attempted coup as a “black stain” on Turkey’s democracy, Yildirim said 161 people had been killed in the night of violence and 1,440 wounded.
This toll did not appear to include 104 rebel soldiers killed overnight, bringing the overall death toll from the bloodshed to 265.

Turkey's president says all he wants is same powers as Hitler
By Richard Spencer Jan 2016
Turkey’s controversial President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has sparked mockery and condemnation by defending new powers he wants to give himself as being similar to Adolf Hitler’s.
In a statement that surprised even his critics, Mr Erdogan responded to arguments that putting political power in the hands of the presidency would not work in a "unitary state".
He said there were other examples of its being successful. "There are already examples in the world,” he said.
“You can see it when you look at Hitler's Germany. There are later examples in various other countries."
The Turkish presidency at present is largely ceremonial, with most powers in the hands of the prime minister. However, when he was prevented constitutionally from standing as prime minister for a fourth election last year, Mr Erdogan stood for the presidency instead, and has used the position to continue his aggressive Islamist agenda.
In the meantime, he has been trying to change the constitution to formalise the situation.

Erdogan declares state of emergency
Elad Benari, 21/07/16
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday evening declared a three-month state of emergency following last week's failed coup, Sky News reported.
In a speech in which he announced the state of emergency, Erdogan warned there "may be more plans" from dissidents to try and overthrow the government again.
He added that the state of emergency was in order to "take the most efficient steps in order to remove this threat as soon as possible, which is a threat to democracy, to the rule of law, and to the rights and freedoms of citizens in our country".
Earlier, noted Sky News, the Turkish President had suggested in an interview that foreign countries may have been involved in last week's attempted putsch.
Erodgan said his efforts to detain those involved, or suspend them from their positions, is far from over.

Erdogan blasts West for ‘taking sides’ against him during coup
By AP August 2, 2016
ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday once more blasted unnamed Western countries for what he said was support for the attempted coup on July 15 which left more than 270 people dead.
“The West is supporting terrorism and taking sides with coups,” Erdogan said.
Speaking at an event for foreign investors in Ankara, Erdogan singled out Germany for criticism, after a German court ruled against allowing him to appear on a video link to address a crowd of about 30,000 supporters and anti-coup demonstrators Cologne over the weekend.
Turkey had sent Germany more than 4,000 files on what he said were wanted terrorists, but Germany did nothing, Erdogan said. However, he said, courts quickly decided against him speaking at the rally.
Erdogan repeated a complaint that no foreign leader had visited Turkey after the failed coup, while France and Belgium received visits in solidarity after terror attacks there.
“Those we considered friends are siding with coup-plotters and terrorists,” the president said.
