Turkey is playing a 'double game' with Israel
By Ari Yashar 4/7/2016
Senior sources in the Israeli security establishment accused Turkey on Thursday of playing a "double game" in rapprochement talks with Israel, even as the negotiating teams on both sides met the same day in an undisclosed location.
"There isn't really anyone to talk with in Turkey. At this point they're using us to pressure the Russians," the sources said as cited by Walla.
The statement refers to how Ankara has been at a standoff with Moscow in recent months, ever since Turkey shot down a Russian fighter jet on the Syrian border last November, and Russia responded with crippling sanctions. With the loss of its top provider of natural gas Turkey began normalization talks with Israel, even as the Jewish state began moving towards developing its offshore gas resources.
The sources noted that the normalization talks were largely motivated by Turkey's desire to buy gas from Israel, and even at the start of the talks last December sources revealed there were plans to discuss a pipeline from Israel to Turkey later on.
According to the security sources cited Thursday, the Turkish authorities have yet to close the Hamas terror headquarters in Istanbul, and according to reports the country continues to purchase oil from Islamic State (ISIS) despite global criticism.
In light of these reasons, as well as anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic comments by senior Turkish officials, the sources estimate that the negotiations are destined to fail.

Israel, Turkey, Russia and Egypt
By Shoshana Bryen April 19, 2016
In 2011, the UN Palmer Commission Report found the blockade of Gaza — jointly administered with Egypt — to be legal, and said Israel owed Turkey neither an apology nor compensation.
Lifting the Israel/Egypt embargo on Gaza would empower Hamas, and thereby the Muslim Brotherhood, Iran and ISIS — which would seem an enormous risk for no gain.
Turkish sources assert that Turkish-Israeli governmental relations are about to come out of the deep freeze. But this is a reflection of Turkey’s regional unpopularity and glides over Turkish demands for Israel to end the blockade of Gaza. To meet Turkey’s condition, Israel would have to abandon the security arrangement it shares with Egypt — which has increased Israel’s security and has begun to pay regional dividends. To restore full relations between Israel and Turkey would irritate Russia, with which Israel has good trade and political relations, and a respectful series of understandings regarding Syria. Israel’s relations with the Kurds are also at issue here.
After the 2010 Mavi Marmara flotilla — in which Turkey supported the Hamas-related Turkish organization, the IHH, in its effort to break the blockade of Gaza — Turkey made three demands of Israel...

Netanyahu: Reconciliation with Turkey is very close
By Ben Ariel 5/31/2016
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu told a delegation of visiting U.S. congressmen on Monday that an agreement on reconciliation with Turkey is very close, Haaretz reports.
However, officials in Jerusalem are still waiting to set the decisive meeting between the two negotiating teams during which the remaining disagreements are meant to be closed.
Israel and Turkey have been holding talks in an attempt to renew ties that were cut after the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident.
That incident involved a Turkish flotilla trying to breach the naval blockade. The main ship, later found not to be carrying humanitarian goods despite its claims, refused orders to turn around and forced IDF soldiers to board it where they were attacked and wounded by Islamists armed with knives and metal bars. The soldiers were forced to open fire to defend themselves, killing ten.
Under pressure from President Barack Obama, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu apologized to Turkey over the incident, and last December Israel reportedly agreed to pay $20 million in compensation to the families of the Islamists.
Talks have stalled, however, over Gaza - and after Turkey reportedly demanded Israel lift its import and export restrictions on the Hamas terror stronghold.

Israeli Politicians: Turkey Reconciliation Deal "National Humiliation"
By JNI Media June 27, 2016
Israeli Knesset members and anti-Zionist Arabs alike are very displeased with the pending new Israeli-Turkish rapprochement.
Israeli politicians on both sides of the aisle were unhappy with the deal. Former minister Gidon Sa’ar (Likud) tweeted: “Israel will pay Turkey reparations for the Marmara? I hope the news is wrong. If it’s true — this is a national humiliation and an invitation for more flotillas and more libels from Israel haters.”
MK Arel Margalit (Zionist Camp) said that “Netanyahu once again capitulated with his tail between his legs before Hamas, hurt the IDF soldiers without blinking, and abandoned the families of the missing.”
Margalit was referring to Turkey’s failure to convince Hamas to sweeten its Israeli deal with Israel by handing over its biggest bargaining chip, the bodies of two Israeli soldiers. Of course, the Turks promised to try, and they probably did, but anyone who expected Netanyahu to be able to come up with a win on that count is either terribly naïve or just hates Netanyahu.
MK Bezalel Smotrich (Habayit Hayehudi) tweeted that “there better be a very good reason to justify the deal with Turkey, which on its face appears shameful.”

Zoabi causes uproar in Knesset, 'celebrates' deal with Turkey
By Hezki Baruch 6/29/2016
A shouting match erupted on the floor of the Knesset on Wednesday during an address by Joint List MK Hanin Zoabi following the government’s ratification of a reconciliation deal with Turkey.
Zoabi, who is known for her outspoken opposition to Zionism and support for pro-Hamas activities, participated in the 2010 “Gaza flotilla” which attempted to break Israel’s security blockade on the Hamas regime in the Gaza Strip. ...
On Wednesday Zoabi gloated over Israel’s concessions to Turkey, including a $20 million compensation package for the families of the Turkish terrorists killed onboard the Mavi Marmara.
Blasting Israeli “incitement”, Zoabi claimed the newly-inked agreement with Turkey vindicated her support for the flotilla and demanded an apology from her critics.
“All of those MKs who joined in the incitement against me must apologize. I’ll take the compensation and donate it for the next flotilla, because so long as there is a blockade on Gaza, we need to organize more flotillas.”

Terror victim families turn to court to block Turkey deal
By Ido Ben Porat 6/29/2016
Shurat Hadin, an organization that represents terror victims in court in Israel and around the world, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court today (Wednesday) in the name of bereaved families against Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and the Cabinet ministers following the agreement with Turkey that enables Hamas to continue operations from within that country.
According to the petition, the agreement provides for Hamas to continue to maintain an official base of operations in Turkish territory, and prevents expulsion and/or prosecution of Hamas officials.
"The agreement fails to address the matter of the close cooperation between Turkey and the Hamas terror organization, which has made it its business to murder Israeli civilians for decades, and Turkey's support of the organization."
The petition also contains the claim that "the agreement completely squanders the opportunity to limit the murderous terror activities perpetrated and directed from Turkish soil, and to achieve justice for victims of terror.
"The agreement completely ignores the consequences of these matters in the security, deterrence, and human spheres, in a manner that is entirely untenable and unreasonable."
"In order to quiet the uproar from this capitulation to terror, the government points out that Turkey has committed to preventing the Hamas military wing from operating in its territory, while the base that remains in Turkey will be part of the Hamas military leadership only. However, the separation between the activities of the military wing--which will not be permitted to operate on Turkish soil, and the political wing--which will continue its relations with the Turks as usual, is entirely without basis in fact or law, goes against previous conventions, and is entirely unreasonable," the petition states.

Revealed: Deal allows Turkey to funnel money into Gaza
By Ari Soffer 7/4/2016
A portion of Israel's recent controversial reconciliation agreement with Turkey which was not initially made public has come to light, and has given critics of the deal significantly greater room for concern.
Under the deal, apart from providing $20 million in compensation to the families of Turkish jihadists killed during an attack on IDF forces during their raid on the Mavi Marmara flotilla in 2010, Israel has approved the passage of aid from Turkey into Gaza, via Ashdod.
So far, so relatively benign - particularly considering that that particular condition meant Turkey was dropping its demand for Israel to lift the security blockade on Gaza totally.
However, according to the newly published section of the agreement, the Turkish government - led by the Islamist, pro-Hamas AKP party - is allowed to transfer large amounts of money to Gaza, via banks approved by Israel to do business in Gaza.
The revelations came as a result of a court petition by families of Israeli terror victims against a different portion of the reconciliation agreement. Bereaved families and terror victim advocates are furious over the decision to award "compensation" to the families of Islamist extremists who conducted attacks against IDF soldiers, accusing the government of effectively incentivizing terrorism.
In its response, the State released the text of the deal - which led to the latest revelation.
According to one of the sections of the agreement, "Turkey will be able to transfer money to the Gaza Strip via banks approved to work in Gaza by Israel and the Palestinian Authority, subject to Israel's security considerations."

Turkish parliament approves deal ending rift with Israel
Aug 20, 2016
Turkey's parliament approved a reconciliation agreement signed with Israel in June which has brought to an end a six-year rift between the two regional powers, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Saturday.
Relations between the two countries crumbled after Israeli marines stormed a Turkish ship in May 2010 to enforce a naval blockade of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, killing 10 Turks on board.
Israel, which had already offered its apologies for the raid, agreed under the deal to pay out $20 million to the bereaved and wounded in return for Turkey dropping outstanding legal claims.
Both countries are to appoint ambassadors under an agreement which is partly driven by the prospect of lucrative Mediterranean gas deals.

Turkey Uses Bilateral Ties with Israel as Alibi
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis August 24, 2016
Turkey - in full momentum since the Erdogan-Putin summit on Aug. 9 - is setting a rapid pace for its rapprochement with Israel. Saturday, Aug. 20, the Turkish parliament ratified the reconciliation agreement Ankara signed with Jerusalem and Prime Minister Binali Yildirim announced that ambassadors would be exchanged soon.
There is even mention of Turkey's President Tayyip Erdogan visiting Israel in September.
Both Ankara and Jerusalem are quickly moving on from their sharp exchange of recriminations this week, over the massive IDF military retaliation against Hamas Sunday and Monday for a missile fired from the Gaza Strip.
Israel harshly reproved Turkey for its condemnation, as hardly in a position to interfere in another government’s response to terrorism.
Erdogan uncharacteristically held silent and let Israel have the last word..
Erdogan and Israel's Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu are clearly of one mind that nothing should be allowed to hinder their burying of the hatchet.
In today's Middle East’s crazy slalom of events, whereby every few hours, new conflicts spring up and new deals are forged – only to end in tatters a couple of days later (e.g. Tehran’s abrupt reversal of its permission to allow the Russia an air base in Western Iran), bilateral realpolitik is bound to be the order of the day.
Yesterday's enemy might be today's friend, and today's friend might become tomorrow's enemy.
