It breaks my heart to hear of people who I know love the Lord, reading books and/or articles written by people who are well known as false teachers. This is not a subject to be taken lightly. The Lord tells us to guard our hearts and minds, and when we allow ourselves to read or watch things that have questionable content, it's no different then inviting wolves into the sheep pen, and that's not pretty.
So, how do you know if someone is a false teacher before you read something they wrote? The first and most important line of defense is to know your bible. I mean, really know it. Not just read it, but study it, and do so daily. The better you know the bible, the better you'll know the Lord, and the harder it will be to fool you. Yes, that takes time, so what do you do in the mean time if you want to read something other then your bible?
For starters, you can check several different websites and see if the name of the author is listed on them. If it is, don't read their books or articles. Look for something else instead. Obviously, no one could list all the false teachers that are out there today (sad, isn't it?) but the sites I'll give you the links to have done a very good job of listing all the well known ones. And if someone is "well known" as a false teacher, that should be a big red flag to you. These sties don't just give you a list of names of people to avoid, they tell you why that person is listed as a false teacher too.
Before I share these sites with you I want to show you a short cut you can use on them to find whatever name you're looking for since the lists can be quite long. Once you've gone to the website, you'll want to use the "find" feature on whichever browser you use. On some browsers it looks like a pair of binoculars,
but you can usually always find it in the menu part where it says "Edit". Just click on "find" and then type in the last name of whoever you want to know about and see if they are listed.
This shows where you can locate the "find" feature in your browser's menu:
Different browsers will act differently, but you'll either get a pop up window or a tool bar either at the top or bottom of your browser will show up, where you can then type in the name of the author/teacher etc you're looking for.. Such as this graphic shows:
When you click "go" or hit enter on your key board, it will then show you the first time that name shows up on the page. If you want to, you can then continue to see if it shows up more then once by clicking the arrows or "find next".
This makes looking through a very long list for someone's name, or the name of a book, very easy.
Now, where to find these lists:

You'll often find one name mentioned more then once in a list. For example, Phillip Yancey is mentioned 3 or 4 times because his false teachings fall under that many different categories. Speaking of categories, let me list what some of the categories for the false teachers are:
CENTERING PRAYER, CHURCH GROWTH, CONTEMPLATIVE SPIRITUALITY, EMERGING CHURCH, LABYRINTH, MYSTICISM, PURPOSE DRIVEN:
CULTIC:
HERETICAL:
NEW AGE MOVEMENT:
HOMOSEXUAL, LESBIAN, PRO-GAY, TRANSGENDERED:
False Prophets, False Teachers, False Healers, Dominionism, Florida Outpouring (Revival), ElijahList, Heresy, Hyper-Charismania, Indigenous Peoples Movement, International Coalition of Apostles, Kingdom Now, Latter Rain, Manifest Sons of God, New Apostolic Reformation, New Breed, Third Wave, Word-Faith:
If you do not understand some of the terms used to describe a false teaching, you can generally discover the meaning by googling them. One place that's good at answering questions is, "Got Questions". Another is CARM. For example:
What is contemplative spirituality? www.gotquestions.org/contemplative-spirituality.html
What is centering prayer? carm.org/centering-prayer
What is the emerging / emergent church movement? www.gotquestions.org/emerging-church-emergent.html
What is a prayer labyrinth? Are prayer labyrinths biblical? www.gotquestions.org/prayer-labyrinth.html
What is Christian dominionism? www.gotquestions.org/Christian-dominionism.html
What is Kingdom Now teaching? www.gotquestions.org/kingdom-now.html
What is the Latter Rain Movement? www.gotquestions.org/latter-rain-movement.html
What is the Manifest Sons of God? This is covered in the latter rain movement: www.gotquestions.org/latter-rain-movement.html
What is the Third Wave Movement? www.gotquestions.org/Third-Wave-movement.html
I'll answer what the ElijahList is. It's a list of people who have decided that they are prophets and they post their prophecies on a website called "the elijah list". So if you go to that site, it will give you a list of all their modern day prophets. The problem is, none of them are real prophets, and their so called prophecies are wrong 99.9% of the time. The less then 1% of the time they're right is when they prophecy something so vague anything could fulfill it. The bottom line is that they do not live up to what God says in His Word about His prophets. God says they must be right 100% of the time, no and's if's or but's about it. So this is a list of some very deceived people, and some of them are quite well known, and have written many books. If you see a name from that list, do not walk away, RUN!!!
Other people have decided that they're modern day apostles, but they do not fulfill God's requirements for an apostles, just like the prophets. .
Finally, let me share what the folks at the Master List say about themselves:
Far too many Christians these days are buying, reading, recommending, selling, lending, promoting and involving themselves with books and authors that either teach or give full endorsement to unbiblical teachings and activities.
The reason for this is that far too many Christians do not “Test all things, hold fast what is good” (1 Thess. 5:21).
The types of books we are referring to are:
Contemplative Spirituality, Cultic, Emerging Church, Heretical, Homosexual, Lesbian,
New Age, Pro-Gay, Purpose Driven, Transgendered,
and Word-Faith Authors and Books Advertised
and Promoted within [MANY] Online and Walk-in Christian Bookstores Worldwide.
Our intention in posting The Master List is not to tell Christians they can’t read books, do research or think for themselves. Rather, it is to warn people about aberrant, heretical and occult teachings and practices that are found in varying capacities in the books on the list.
If you recognize an author, book or ministry on this list we encourage you to be careful if you are wanting to buy the buy or recommend it to a friend or family member. Do your own research and test what you find, in light of sound biblical theology. This is what Christian research ministries and pastors are doing in order to warn people against spiritual deception and this is why we have made this list available.
Lastly, our motivation in posting this list is not to malign, pick on, make fun of, slander or speak ill of any fellow human being. Our motivation is to lovingly exhort people to use discernment in regards to these books, authors and ministries. The list is updated from time to time and can be of great use to bookstore owners, affiliates, customers, distributors, employees, managers, publishers and vendors of both online and walk-in Christian bookstores.
It is our prayer that you will be spared from unbiblical teachings and practices that could lead you away from the biblical Jesus Christ and the Gospel of God as found in the Bible.
