Pope Francis Joins Lecrae, Hillsong at Historic 1 Million-Strong 'Together 2016' DC Event

Evangelical leaders are calling on 1 million Christians to gather together in the nation's capital next month for prayer and worship at a historic event called "Together 2016."

Inspired by Nick Hall, the founder of PULSE, a prayer and evangelism movement to empower the church and awaken the culture to Jesus, Americans are being urged to unite on the National Mall on July 16 to offer prayer that God will change the hearts of a divided America.

Adding his name to the lineup of pomenant guest speakers and musicians is Pope Francis, who will deliver a video message addressing the crowd.

"We are humbled and honored by his involvement and are eager to share his message with the crowd that gathers at Together 2016," Hall said in a statement to The Christian Post, reacting to the announcement that the pope has added his name to the list of speakers. "That His Holiness would choose to speak into this historic day is a testament to the urgency and the need for followers of Jesus to unite in prayer for our nation and our world."

Hall, a college pastor, came up with the radical idea of uniting pastors and Christian leaders from all denominational backgrounds to join 1 million people at the free event in hopes of inspiring true revival in the America.

Pope Francis Meets With Evangelical, Pentecostal Leaders in John 17 Spirit

Pope Francis and several prominent Evangelical and Pentecostal leaders met in Rome last Friday to discuss areas of mutual agreement and where they respectfully disagreed. The aim of the gathering, which had no official agenda, was to build unity between Christian traditions that have historic enmity.

The Rev. Dr. Geoff Tunnicliffe, former secretary general of the World Evangelical Alliance and chairman of the Advisory Board of Christian Media Corporation, said in an interview with The Christian Post Tuesday, that there was a John 17 spirit during the two meetings he had with Pope Francis. Tunnicliffe noted that formal meetings with the pope are often said to last only 30 minutes but one informal meeting with Francis and Evangelical and Charismatic leaders lasted over two hours. Those at the gathering sensed the presence of God, according to Tunnicliffe, and a unity of the Spirit as their discussions focused on Jesus Christ even as they talked about theological differences.

"These theological discussions have to take place in the context of relationship. Otherwise they become cold. And we are thankful for those opportunities where it is about building friends, while not dismissing the theological distinctives," the former WEA leader explained. These relationships are what "help create the framework for the deeper discussions as well."

Italian Pentecostal minister Giovanni Traettino was one of the key conveners of these meetings with Francis, with the two having enjoyed a steady friendship over many years. In July 2014, Pope Francis traveled to Traettino's Church of Reconciliation in the southern Italian city of Caserta to apologize for the persecutions Pentecostals experienced at the hands of Roman Catholics. As was widely reported at that time, Francis, whose papacy had just begun the previous year, said: "I ask for your forgiveness for those who, calling themselves Catholic, didn't understand we're brothers," and called for a "Church that is one in its diversity."

Tunnicliffe mentioned in the interview with CP that these kinds of apologies were reciprocated by several Evangelicals in the meeting who had themselves mistreated Catholics in their respective communities. Those gathered articulated the need for greater reconciliation in the Church as a whole, emphasizing the desire to see Christ's prayer in John 17:20-23 be fulfilled.

300 denominations meet for ecumenical gathering in Munich

Some 1,700 Christians from around 300 denominations have met in Munich for a 'Together in Europe' gathering of the Ecumenical Congress promoting unity between Catholics, Protestants and Evangelicals.

In a meeting supported by Pope Francis and Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I, leaders of the Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, several Orthodox Churches, Protestant denominations and free evangelical denominations including some Baptists and Pentecostals debated for three days about how to walk towards "encounter, reconciliation and hope in a better future."

"We want to contribute towards reconciliation of Christians and of Churches," the organisers said on their website. "Through our witness of unity and reconciliation we also hope to impact on society as a whole. We want to encourage all people of our time to respond with a decisive and hopeful yes for going ahead together and overcoming barriers among people, nations, social and cultural groups."

"The division amongst Christians in Europe is a wound, but it does not have to be open forever...500 years are enough."
