I was shocked at what I read in one of my commentaries today, and just have to share it with you:
This verse was curiously perverted in the famous Bull of Pope Boniface VIII, “Unam sanctam,” to prove his possession of both secular and spiritual power: St Luke Vol. II. 1909
The verse they're talking about is this one: “The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.” “That is enough,” he replied.” (Luke 22:38) I'll post it in context for you at the end. I looked up the Bull and this is what it said:
On 18 November 1302, Pope Boniface VIII issued the Papal bull Unam sanctam which some historians consider one of the most extreme statements of Papal spiritual supremacy ever made. The bull proclaimed, "outside of her (the Church) there is neither salvation nor the remission of sins". It declares that those who resist the Roman Pontiff are resisting God's ordination. The bull also declared that the Church must be united, the Pope was the sole & absolute head of the Church. The Bull also stated: We are informed by the texts of the gospels that in this Church and in its power are two swords; namely, the spiritual and the temporal. Thus, it was concluded, the temporal authorities must submit to the spiritual authorities, not merely on matters concerning doctrine and morality: "For with truth as our witness, it belongs to spiritual power to establish the terrestrial power and to pass judgment if it has not been good." The bull ends: Furthermore, we declare, we proclaim, we define that it is absolutely necessary for salvation that every human creature be subject to the Roman Pontiff. Wikipedia
Talk about the pride and selfishness of the human heart! Wow! Here the pope is insisting that he not only is head of the church, but also has the right to rule all the nations and tell them what to do or not to do! this is born out by what this pope did with his proclamation and how he tried to get kings to do his will because of it, and his "will" had nothing to do with God or God's Will, but was only and purely about having power over the populace and not allowing anyone to have more power then he did or allowing anyone, kings included to escape his power! Plus of course, as usual, what they took from this verse has absolutely NOTHING to do with what the verse is actually about!
Here's the verse in context:
“Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” “Nothing,” they answered. He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.” The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.” “That is enough,” he replied.” (Luke 22:35–38)
Truly, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)
“He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe.” (Proverbs 28:26)
“They plot injustice and say, “We have devised a perfect plan!” Surely the mind and heart of man are cunning.” (Psalm 64:6)
