Some Can’t Believe Their Lyin’ Eyes
December 16, 2015 Posted in Truth.
Wheaton College, a Christian College, placed Dr. Larycia Hawkins, a
tenured political science professor, on administrative leave this
week. The suspension was due to comments she made about the
relationship of Christianity to Islam following her public
announcement that she will be wearing a hijab… a Muslim headscarf…
throughout the advent season.
Dr. Hawkins wants to show solidarity with Muslims believing she and
they are both “People of the Book.” She went on to quote Pope Francis
as saying that Christians and Muslims worship the same God. Indeed,
in his very first ecumenical meeting, Pope Francis greeted Muslims,
“who worship the one God, living and merciful, and call on Him in
prayer.” The Pope is in complete agreement with the Second Vatican
Council which taught that Muslims worship the “one true God.”
As “People of the Book,” one has to ask Dr. Hawkins and Pope Francis,
“Exactly what book are you people of?” It certainly can’t be the
Bible. At least not the Bible that says, “I (Jesus) am the way, and
the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me,”
(John 14:6) or “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of
God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord,” (Romans 6:23).
The Qur’an doesn’t teach that the way to Heaven is through Jesus. In
fact, the Qur’an teaches that whoever submits his whole self to Allah
and is a doer of good will get his reward with his Lord.
Again, this couldn’t be more at odds with what the Bible teaches:
For it is by God’s grace that you have been saved through faith. It is
not the result of your own efforts, but God’s gift, so that no one can
boast about it, (Ephesians 2:8-9). Mark 10 tells of how Jesus went
out of his way to try to show a rich, young ruler that there was no way
he could earn eternal life but by giving his life to Jesus, rather
than to his wealth.
The Christian Bible teaches that the “one true God” is made up of
Father (Creator), Son (Savior) and Holy Spirit (Helper). Even in the
Old Testament, written before the birth of Jesus, God often speaks of
Himself in a plural “We,” suggesting Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have
existed always. The prediction of a coming Messiah, or Savior, is
included in the Old Testament Books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus,
Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Ruth, 1 and 2 Samuel, 2 Kings, 1
Chronicles, Job, Psalms, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea,
Joel, Jonah, Micah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi.
