Study: Dropping Facebook makes people happier
Bob Unruh
A stunning new study from Denmark shows that social media distorts reality, provides a false perception of what others are accomplishing in their lives and people actually cheer up when they drop their participation.
The study, done by the Happiness Research Institute, asked more than 1,000 participants for their feelings with and without using social media, specifically Facebook.
The result?
Responding to the question, “In general, how satisfied are you with you[r] life today?” on a 1-to-10 scale, the control group responded with a 7.67 average at the beginning of the test.
They were allowed to continue to use Facebook as they had been doing, and at the end of a week responded to the same question with an average response of 7.75.
But in the study group, members assessed their lives at an average 7.56 at the beginning of the study and said their level of happiness rose to an average 8.12 after a week of no Facebook.
“We asked both groups what moods they had experienced that day. People who had taken a break from Facebook felt happier and were less sad and lonely,” the study concluded. “After one week without Facebook the treatment group experienced an increase in their social activity – and an increase in their satisfaction with their social life.”

I never noticed that much difference when I stopped going to FB but I just decided so much of it was trivial. It was like when I decided most of the Christian fiction books I read were trivial. Nothing really wrong with them, but not worth my time.

I can totally relate to that study. I believe FB takes a lot more away from people then we even realize. I wish they'd do a study like that on just Christians and have the group without facebook stay away from it for a year and then take the results. I don't feel that way about the Christian fiction that I read though, because I learn so much from the ones I read. I often wind up putting notes in my bible from the books that relate to different verses as they show me what it looks like to be a Christian today. Of course that's not true for all Christian fiction though, you have to be careful about which ones you read, for much of what's supposedly Christian fiction, really isn't or is full of false teaching; therefore I'm careful about which authors I read. Plus, I read books much differently then I used to, because now I talk to the Lord as I read them asking His opinion or just chatting. He often uses the books I'm reading to teach me another lesson about the scripture He was teaching me about earlier that day. It never ceases to amaze me how He can do that!

"For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise." ( 2 Cor 10:12 )
If you think you are better than others, when you really aren’t, you are wrong. Do your own work well, and then you will have something to be proud of. But don’t compare yourself with others. ( Gal 6:3-4 )
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV).

I have heard from a Christian site that Mark Zucherberg is starting to censor things on FB that have to do with immigration, and some other sensitive subjects. In Germany a person can get a fine or 29 days in jail for making an anti immigration post. In Lebanon there have been arrests and prison time for journalist and bloggers, and also in the country in Turkey. Oh here is the video, I didn't know it was going to be on my post, since I only put the link down.

What about moderation in all things, including FB, Li, and other boards? And, who said one had to constantly read and write large amounts of personal things. Mine for example carries very little personal information, of myself or of others. My group, likewise, carries very little personal information, of myself or of others. Again, I ask: what about moderation in all things?

I think Facebook is pushing for moderation. In Germany the head of Facebook is under investigation over the social networks alleged failure to remove racist hate speech. They have said that they will encourage their users to push back against racism.

Again, I ask: what about moderation in all things? 'Moderation in all things' may seem simple enough, but I think the challenge is defining what 'moderation' is -- so how is moderation then defined? The answer is as individual and as complex as one's opinion and personality. There is no one-size-fits-all definition of moderation.

Your argument is with The Bible, because it implies temperance, balance, we translate such into moderation in all things :)

My intent wasn't to argue at all, Roland, but only to present the challenge of defining the term 'moderation'. Do I need to ask the question again with more clarity as I seem to have been completely misunderstood?

Some time ago I'd heard comments that FB was run by the Intel agencies. Its main prupose was alleged to be collecting as much information on everyone as possible, the sort of stuff the spooks could only dream of. Now, not only is it there , but people have done it willingly. I have no idea if the Intel agencies run it, but nothing would surprise me these days.
Dont forget when you post something up on FB - you cease to own it - FB owns it. Pictures of you kids, your life story, who your friends are, what you do - all handed to FB on a silver platter. Would you give you life story and all those details to a total stranger who came to your door? And, should push come to shove, all this stuff can be used against you.
Be *very* careful about what you post.
People say - "hey my life is so trivial why would anyone care?"
Well simply that Satan will use anything against a believer he can, so if you make it *easy* for him to lock up as many christians as possible, youve done his job for him.....
Be smart, dont be paranoid, but be intelligent about what you post.

good points Steve. I still have a lot of problems with it and don't really like going on it at all, but do it anyway...sometimes at least. Mostly just to give a link to something here and try and spread God's Word and love. But I feel like I'm in enemy territory when I'm there and that's not a good feeling. I'd much rather be here, but no one comes here much, so .... oh well. I'll just do what the Lord tells me to, whether or not anyone reads what I post.
