Russia won’t be drawn into arms race, but needs to catch up – Putin
11 Nov, 2015 RTNews
Russia won’t take part in any kind of arms race, but the country’s defense industry needs to bridge some gaps, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said.
“We're not going to get involved in some sort of arms race. Especially, chase or bypass somebody,” Putin said during a meeting on the development of Russian armed forces in Sochi.
“We just need to catch up on what was lost at the turn of the 1990s – 2000s when the armed forces and the military-industrial complex were chronically underfunded,” he added.
During the meeting, the president stressed the importance of implementing measures aimed at increasing the efficiency of interaction between the Defense Ministry and the military-industrial complex.
“Creating a modern army equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry and military hardware, of course, remains one of the priorities of military construction. In fact, it was always like that,” he said.
The amount of new and upgraded models of weaponry received by the Russian military this year has increased by over a quarter compared to 2014, according to Putin.
“It’s important that the incoming modern weaponry is extensively used" by the armed forces, he added.

Putin boasts of new Russian nuclear weapons that ‘can’t be intercepted’
By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV
MOSCOW (AP) — Russia has tested an array of new strategic nuclear weapons that can’t be intercepted, the country’s President Vladimir Putin announced Thursday, marking a technological breakthrough that would dramatically increase Russia’s military capability and boost the Kremlin’s global position.
Speaking in a state-of-the-nation speech, Putin said the weapons include a nuclear-powered cruise missile, a nuclear-powered underwater drone and new hyper-sonic missile. He said the creation of the new weapons has made NATO’s US-led missile defense “useless,” and means an effective end to what he described as Western efforts to stymie Russia’s development.
“I want to tell all those who have fueled the arms race over the last 15 years, sought to win unilateral advantages over Russia, introduced unlawful sanctions aimed to contain our country’s development: all what you wanted to impede with your policies have already happened,” he said. “You have failed to contain Russia.”
The announcement comes as Putin is set to easily win another six-year presidential term in the March 18 election.

Putin on new US nuclear stance: If attacked, Russia will use nukes
1 Mar, 2018 RTNews
The new US nuclear posture allows a nuclear strike in response to a conventional attack. President Vladimir Putin said Russia, if attacked with nuclear weapons, would not hesitate to respond in kind.
The warning came during a state of the nation address delivered by the Russian president on Thursday, in which he presented a number of new advanced strategic weapon systems which, he said, would render all anti-missile capabilities that the US currently has powerless. Putin also mentioned the new American nuclear posture, which has relaxed some rules on when the US is prepared to use its nuclear weapons.
...
“It is my duty to state this: Any use of nuclear weapons against Russia or its allies, be it small-scale, medium-scale or any other scale, will be treated as a nuclear attack on our country. The response will be instant and with all the relevant consequences,” Putin warned.
