For the first time ever, Egypt votes for Israel at the UN
By Ari Soffer 11/2/2015
For the first time since Israel's establishment in 1948, Egypt has voted in the Jewish state's favor in the United Nations.
The vote came during elections for membership in the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) late last week.
The vote for Israel triggered angry criticism among Arab social media users, with some even creating a hashtag "Egypt votes for Israel" to criticize the vote.
In the face of the backlash Egyptian officials scrambled to clarify that they had only voted for Israel in order to enable the election of several Arab states as well.
"Egypt’s commitment to support the candidate of the Arab countries is the main motive behind the vote in favor of the resolution," Egyptian Foreign Ministetry Spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid told The Cairo Post Saturday.

United to Fight Against Terror, Israel and Egypt Reach New Levels of Unprecedented Cooperation
By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz July 12, 2016
“But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am Hashem your God.” Leviticus 19:34
Recent reports of IDF drones operating in the Sinai in coordination with the Egyptian government have brought to light a sign of deepening relations between Israel and its former arch enemy.
Egypt has been fighting a difficult war against the Islamic State (ISIS) in the Sinai since their long-time president, Hosni Mubarak was ousted in 2011. An anonymous former Israeli official told the Bloomberg news agency that Israeli drones have been used many times against ISIS-affiliated terrorists in the Sinai Peninsula.
“The level of cooperation is something we’ve never experienced before,” Major-General Yair Golan, the Israeli Deputy Chief of General Staff, said to Bloomberg. “It’s not about love, it’s not about common values. I wouldn’t describe it as the relationship we have with the United States of America, but I think it’s a good starting point.”
This war, along with other mutual security concerns such as Gaza terror tunnels, have led to improved relations with the Jewish state. In addition to the drones, Israel is also reportedly sharing intelligence sources with Egypt. Further, Israel waived restrictions established in the Camp David Accords in 1978, allowing Egypt to deploy troops and heavy weapons beyond what is permitted in order to fight their common enemy in the Sinai.

Israel Hits ISIS in Sinai as Ties With Egypt Intensify
By P. David Hornik July 14, 2016
“A former senior Israeli official,” Bloomberg reports, “said his country has conducted numerous drone attacks on militants in Sinai in recent years with Egypt’s blessing. He spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential military activity.”
“Militants in Sinai” refers primarily to ISIS, which has a branch there called Sinai Province. The Sinai Peninsula is a part of Egypt that Israel, after wresting it from Egypt in the 1967 Six Day War, handed back as part of the 1981 Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty.
In light of the fact that, since Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi took power in 2013, Israel and Egypt have maintained tight security cooperation, such Israeli drone strikes come as no surprise. ISIS in Sinai has mounted dozens of attacks on Egyptian security personnel there, and threatens Israel as well.
Sisi, who in 2013 overthrew Egypt’s short-lived Muslim Brotherhood government, has also moved aggressively against a Brotherhood offshoot, Hamas, in Gaza—again with Israeli cooperation.
But with a visit to Israel this week by Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Shoukry, the Israeli-Egyptian relationship appears to have taken an important step beyond the security sphere. It was the first visit to Israel by an Egyptian foreign minister in nine years. By all accounts, Shoukry’s talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were held in a good atmosphere and went well.
