Some people are tick off in rural villages The Cher department in central France used to be a stronghold of the left. During World War II, it was one of the heartlands of the French resistance fighters known as maquisards. France was at the time partly occupied by Nazi Germany, while the rest of the country was under the rule of French general Philippe Petain, whose Vichy government was collaborating with the Nazis. Since the 1950s, several provincial towns of the Cher, such as Vierzon, even voted in the Communist Party. But in last Sunday's first round of voting in France's parliamentary elections, candidates from the far-right National Rally (RN), the party of former presidential candidate Marine Le Pen, came first in all three of Cher's constituencies. On a national level, the RN won the highest share of votes, with more than 33%. The left-wing alliance New Popular Front (NFP), including far-left movement France Unbowed, the Socialist Party, the Greens and the Communist Party, came second with about 28% of the vote. Bad news going be perhaps delock Parliment in France No majority, no obvious coalition: What is next in France? — live updates The victorious left/green New Popular Front and an unexpected surge in votes for president Macron's liberal Ensemble alliance have beaten Marine Le Pen's nationalists into third place in France’s legislative assembly elections. The leftist New Popular Front (NFP) has defied the odds to win 182 seats, beating Marine Le Pen's National Rally into third place on 143 seats. President Emmanuel Macron Ensemble, on 168 seats, has been severely wounded, if less than predicted, and pathway to formation of a new government looks complicated. With no obvious coalition available - and indeed no tradition for coalition building in France - could France seek inspiration from elsewhere. Might bridge-building deployed with effect by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in the European Parliament work for France? Will the diverse grouping of leftist parties forming the NFP remain as one now that it has achieved its aim of holding the far right at bay? Will the smaller centre-right Republicans group, with 45 seats, agree to work with a leftist Prime Minister? What form of uneasy 'cohabitation' might lie ahead? Yeah I think French don t want right wing it bring back bad memories French election: Leftists win big, far right places third The leftist New Popular Front (NFP) grabbed the top spot in the second round of the French legislative election on Sunday in a shock result that saw the far-right drop into third place. The NFP coalition won 182 seats, whereas French President Emmanuel Macron's centrist Ensemble ("together") alliance came second with 168 MPs, according to provisional results published by France's Interior Ministry. Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally (RN) and its allies unexpectedly landed in third place with 143 seats, far short of predictions after the first round of voting gave a clear victory to the anti-immigration populists. Following the left-wing triumph, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal – a Macron ally who had nevertheless been opposed to the calling of the snap election – tendered his resignation. But this was rejected by the President on Monday, who has instead asked Attal to remain in office "for the time being in order to ensure the stability of the country." www.dw.com/en/french-election-leftists-win-big-far-right-places-third/a-69588986
