I've been reading a couple of books (fiction) written by a British Author in 1910. His name is Sydney Watson. Two things really got my attention in these books. First that he got 99% or more of it right and second that it was written in 1910, long before Hal Lindsey or any others came along! What I also enjoyed was that although he wrote it as fiction, it was full of scripture showing how he came to his conclusions, and throughout the book, he begged people to get saved NOW because he believed even then that the rapture could occur at any moment. He also showed throughout the book, how history, including what for him was current history, had brought society to this moment of expecting that the Lord should come any moment.
I know that we too have scrutinized our more recent history, as well as some past history and shown how the Lord is putting everything into place even now. What I learned though was that we didn't go back nearly far enough to see just how God had allowed Satan to work things in the world to bring about a culture that accepted things like abortion, homosexuality, and all kinds of perversion, as well as causing so much unrest, hate and violence. Watson shows how all of this was already well into the works by the late 1800's! (and then gives evidence of it). It's truly amazing, at least it was to me.
Although these are the most recent books I've read concerning this, they're not by far the only ones. I've also read a number of commentaries and non fiction books written by pastors from the early to late1800's, one of which I shared part of several years ago. You can still find it on my old blog: The Way To Heaven: or A Help To Christians To Know The True State of Their Souls. The second part of that book, which I never got to post, was about the rapture and how it would happen soon, so it would be wise to be sure of our salvation. As I recall, there was some of that in the first part as well. Most of the ones I've read have been from about 1860 to 1925 and there seem to be a great many pastors who taught a pretrib rapture. It seems as though it was fairly common accepted knowledge among most Christians back then. A love for Israel was also taught and expected among Christians then. Watson's books have also helped open my eyes to way God's Word has been fulfilled that I hadn't noticed before.
There's one thing that I found quite sad about what he wrote. He shows of course how horribly Christians were fooled by Satan so they began walking with the world instead of being separated to God and walking with Christ. We show the same now. The difference is that many of the things he shows, we don't even blink at or consider today. That shows just how desensitized and blinded we've become. I'm mainly talking about morals here, and how they have been slowly and carefully undermined by Satan until eventually everyone, including Christians forgot about them. It shows why people are the way they are today. In fact in some ways I could even consider his books to be prophetic, because without knowing it, when he described how things would be "during the tribulation", he's actually describing how things are right now. That's just how horrible he and many other pastors viewed the way we live today. They felt it was so incredibly sinful that the only time it could possibly happen would be during the tribulation! It makes me feel so very ashamed and also feel that God must surely send Jesus for His beloved Church soon! Like Watson, I can't imagine....I don't want to imagine the world getting any worse with us still here.
If you'd like to read his books, they're: In the Twinkling of an Eye (1910), and The Mark of the Beast (1915) by Sydney Watson. "The desire of the author of "The Mark of the Beast" has been to further "startle" and awaken "careless, ill-taught professing Christians," by giving some faint view of the fate of those professors who will be "left behind" to go through the horrors of The Tribulation."
