As I was studying with the Lord this morning, I came across a scripture that's repeated a number of times in the gospels. It simply said that Jesus went to the synagogue on the Sabbath as was His custom. Like you, I've read those scriptures many times and not thought much about it other then that it was His habit to go to the synagogue and it should be our habit to go to church, right? But then we have the problem that many, if not most of the churches today are filled with false teaching, and false teachers, so many of us don't go to church any longer. Or perhaps, like me, they may still be searching to find a church that isn't full of false teaching. What hit me today was that it was the very same way when Jesus was here! The synagogues were full of false teaching then too! Not just some of them, but all of them! Yet Jesus still went on every Sabbath. He didn't stop going, and didn't try to find one that didn't have any false teaching. At times, when opportunity arose, He would correct the false teachers, like when He was going to heal the man with the shriveled hand. He told us though that we should first bring up things we disagree with in private with the teacher/pastor and not confront them publicly. He could do so because He knew their hearts and knows all things, which we of course don't. Anyway, the main point that hit me was that Jesus went regularly even though they were filled with false teaching. He didn't allow that to stop Him from going to synagogue or to the Temple to worship God. (Synagogue's back then were for teaching and learning the scriptures, not for worship. For worship, they went to the Temple as God had said that was the only place they could worship Him. Of course that isn't true for us, as we don't need the Temple to worship, since He dwells within us.)
This is something I'm going to have to reflect on for awhile and pray about, but I wanted to share it so others could as well, or if this is old news to you, I'd love to hear what you think.
