As I read this Psalm this morning, it seemed to me to be a perfect description of the 2nd coming. See what you think. I'll put my comments in green by the verses to show what I'm thinking and to give a bit of it's history... First, its interesting to note that this psalm was one of Luther's favorites and the one that inspired his wonderful hymn, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Selah
The first few verses look like a regular psalm and are simply encouraging and reminding us that no matter how horrible things look, even if everything that we consider stable in our world falls away, that we can still always count on God. Having read the rest of the psalm however, we can also consider these verses to possibly be speaking of what actually appears to be happening at the time. I'm getting ahead of myself though, so let's continue.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.
Years ago I put a note by the above verse asking if this could possibly be speaking of when the Lord will actually return: at the break of day, Yet, this still doesn't seem like the 2nd coming on the face of it...not yet anyway. These verses actually go with the first ones and are still an encouragement, reminding us that we're not alone, the Lord will help us, except it goes further by suggesting the actual time He will appear..... When we see the last part, I think you'll see why I thought this could be a picture of the second coming.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah Come and see the works of the LORD, the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the shields with fire. “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah” (Psalm 46:1–11)
Interesting isn't it? It sure sounds like what will happen after Armageddon and what the earth will look like just before He appears doesn't it. Remember, we know that at the very end of Armageddon, just before Jesus comes, Israel will be taken by the AntiChrist and be under his power. What we don't know is for how long. It may be for days, hours or just minutes, but for that short time, Israel, especially Jerusalem, will fall. Knowing that the end is so very close, and knowing too the horror the AntiChrist will spew out on the Jew's then, we can see why every second, every moment will seem like an eternity to those still alive. Their beloved Jerusalem will be in the enemies hands, every moment another loved one will be being tortured and yet another will die. At the same time, these people so precious to our Lord will know that He IS coming and will return at any moment - that's why the moments will seem so very long to them.
Just as the apostles stood looking up when Jesus ascended, so many who are not in the midst of the fighting, perhaps those at Petra, will stand searching the sky with all their strength, willing Him to come NOW, to end the horror or nothing at all will be left to save! Then....as another day begins to dawn, they see Him! He Comes! I can't imagine the joy that will fill their hearts at that instant - the instant they see Him, their King and their God, riding a white horse, with all of us and the angels riding behind Him. Truly like the cavalry coming at the last instant to save the day! I imagine that in some ways it will seem like a dream to them, but it will be very real. Their creator will come and save them and recreate and restore first Jerusalem and Israel and then the rest of the earth. He will judge all who live through the tribulation and we know what He will do with the Antichrist and False Prophet. And finally, finally, Israel will truly believe and be able to say, "The Lord Almighty is with us!"
Can you see it too? What do you think?
