This is hard for me to write as I haven't been able to figure out how to explain this as it's something I've seen in the life of another person. They began telling a lie about another person in their life and after a few years even began telling other people that lie which caused the person they were lying about a great deal of grief. Whether or not they realized what they were doing, and I have to believe that they at least suspected it, they were slandering an innocent person and gossiping about them. It was especially bad because the person being lied about had no idea it was happening. the only thing they knew is that something was wring with their relationship with this person, and so they kept trying to make it better and reconcile with them. But they refused.
What I noticed though was that this one lie, slowly began collecting other lies. Lies about other people, and eventually lies about God and His Word. Over the years as they continued to hang on to this lie and insist it was true, (even though they should have known better) their entire belief system changed. I thought they had been saved before this started but after it started, slowly but surely, they let go of the only One that could help them, and even stopped going to church. On top of that, they started believing other lies that other people told them. I also noticed that they tended to create strife and division among other people instead of love and friendship. They actually began to speak and act hatefully to their brothers and sisters. It's awful seeing how this has happened. Their love seems to have quite literally turned cold. They have gone from not allowing their children to participate in halloween many years ago, because they were a Christian, to now telling their kids to go ahead and have sex, just use a condom! I don't mean that they say that privately. No, I heard it with my own ears at their daughter's birthday party! They actually bragged about it! I couldn't believe it.
So why am I telling you all of this? Because for the last couple of months the Lord has been showing me that this isn't just an isolated incident, but happens all the time. He has shown me how very dangerous it is to lie about anything, or to slander or gossip about another person. Lying is quite literally of Satan, just as Truth is of God. In fact, Jesus is Truth and His Word is Truth! (John 17:17). The Lord's shown me many different scriptures over the last month. I can't share them all with you, but will share a few of them. Please, let this be a warning to us all to be very careful of what we choose to believe about other people, and of course about God and His Word. God is very, very serious when He tells us we're to love others and we are not to judge them. He says we're to forgive them and reconcile with them if that person will allow it to happen. When we refuse to do that, the consequences can be horrible! In this cause it's taken almost 25 years for this all to happen. I'm praying that they will come to Christ and reconcile with this person too. But their life is a waste right now.
“You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44)
““You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord?” (Acts 13:10)
“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
“To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”” (John 8:31–32)
“Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.” (Romans 14:13)
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32)
“The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.” (2 Thessalonians 2:9–12)
“Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.” (Romans 1:28–32)
