Nehemiah 11:1-36
The Leaders in Jerusalem
So they decide 10% of the population should live in Jerusalem, and the leaders. To do this did not come without costs ( like their land, friends, enemies etc.)
Interesting in the lists that follow it says the son or sons of. And it lists of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin), , priests, Levites, gatekeepers, and civil and royal servants and military men....with how many men of each there was.
Gotta love the names :-) I actually over the years have enjoyed being able to slowly on pronounce them ( well probably not like a Jew from Israel would but at least in any way at all).
and then it mentions Jewish villages and towns Villages Outside Jerusalem, throughout Judea.

Nehemiah chapter 11 This chapter is difficult to comment on. After the book of Nehemiah I am going to take a break from Bible study but will be back in a while.
Jerusalem is called here the holy city because the temple was there and that was the place God had chosen to put his name there. This chapter treats of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, those of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, who settled there by lot, or of their own accord, their names and numbers, Nehemiah 11:1, and of the priests and Levites who dwelt there, Nehemiah 11:10, and of the rest of the people, priests, and Levites, that dwelt in the other cities and villages of Judah and Benjamin, Nehemiah 11:20. And the rulers of the people dwelt at Jerusalem. Where it was proper they should, being the metropolis of the nation, both for the performance of their offices, and to protect and defend it, as well as to set an example to the people, and encourage them to dwell there.
they were taken to oblige some to dwell in it, by taking one out of ten by lot, that there might be a sufficient number to rebuild the houses of it, repopulate and defend it.

Nehemiah 12:1-47
We get a list of the names of the priests and the Levites in the days of Zerubbabel, the high priest, and Joiakim, also the Levites during the reign of Darius the Persian.
It makes me wonder since this work was passed down from father to son, if there were sons not really really suited for this position....I am sure many were but some may have had different 'gifts' or their sin nature was such they had no love of God!!
Dedication of the Wall
With songs of worship, singing, and instruments.
It's interesting that the singers seemed to be close knit and lived in villages around Jerusalem.
There were 2 groups going in opposite directions around the Wall...
This whole wall thing reminds me of how hard its been for the present President to build our southern wall! But the real wall we need to build is against sin, and one of the best ways is being in the Word of God.
Thinking about singing also. I was listening to a young amazing singer, he has a vocal range that is in fact ,off the chart.....he can hit a whistle note that is beyond the piano's highest range etc. He can seemingly slide from low to high with no strain in a seamless manner etc etc.
He absolutely beyond almost any other human singer....but it is not worship to God, and that is so sad! he does not do silly pop ( and even many opera singers woman and so forth cannot explain how he can do what he does)
However there will be no singing in Hell..... I, of course, do not know that he will in fact go there ( he is a Muslim at this point in his young life....tho I kind of doubt a very good one, as he does so many concerts around the world.
Still there is such a big difference in using your gift (but perhaps not as great a gift as this young singer) that God gave you for God,
.Or having a superior talent than maybe anybody ever, but using it for yourself ( or even satan....knowingly or not).

In this chapter are the records the names of the chief of the priests and the Levites that came up with Zerubbabe, the course of the high priests, the names of the next generation of the other chief priests, the notable Levites that were in Nehemiah's time, the ceremony of dedicating the wall of Jerusalem. Records must have been kept to keep remembrance of those good men.

I did not sleep one wink last night, so if this is disjointed or whatever sorry!! :-( Nehemiah 13: 1-31
Nehemiah's Final Reforms
First there was the reading of God's word And in it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever enter the assembly of God, they had hired Balaam against them to curse them. Now the curse had sort of come back on them.
Then the people separated and obeyed, no excuses.
However there was more, stuff that happened when Nehemiah had gone back to the Persian court. Elishab, the priest had prepared a room, in the temple, for one of the enemies of the Wall, Tobiah a pagan enemy at that! So Nehemiah threw all of Tobiah things and and restored it back to what was supposed to in there.
Next the Levites had not been given their portions so they had to leave and go work in fields. The people did not see the house of God and those who worked there as priority, they had turned their backs on Him. Therefore he set that straight also.
And the natural progression was the Sabbath was ignored also and it was 'business' as usual...making money was the priority...remind me of money as the root of evil ( self-centered instead of God centered).
And they had resumed intermarrying. He reminded them of Solomon.
But this shows us that the 'law' legalism by itself is powerless against sin. It too is a kind of self centeredness that we think we can do, all by ourselves without God, however we will fail every time, just like they did. If we could do it, there would have been no need of Jesus to come and die for our sins......but we cannot and we do need Him!!!

Nehemiah chapter 13 Nehemiah, having finished what he undertook returned to the king in Jerusalem. It was the honor of Israel, and the greatest preservation of their holiness, that they were a peculiar people, and were so to keep themselves, and not to mingle with the nations, nor suffer any of them to incorporate with them. He readdressed grievances, and purge out some corruptions which had crept in in his absence; and very active he was in reforming several abuses, which here we have an account of. He turned out from Israel the mixed multitude, the Moabites and Ammonites. They found a law, that the Ammonites and Moabites should not be naturalized, should not settle among them, nor unite with them. The reason given is because they had been injurious and ill natured to the God of Israel. With a particular indignation, he expelled Tobiah out of the lodgings he had got in the court of the temple. Tobiah, who was an Ammonite, had the same enmity to Israel that his ancestors had. Nehemiah secured the maintenance of the priests and Levites to them more firmly than it had been. He restrained the profanation of the sabbath day, and provided for the due sanctification of it. He checked the growing mischief of marrying strange wives.
A lesson for now days, when sin is cast out of the heart by repentance, let the blood of Christ be applied to it by faith, and then let it be furnished with the graces of God's Spirit for every good work.

Good! How do you think believers today would react if 10% of them were asked to relocate for the sake of the body of Christ? Somehow I don't think they'd do as well as Israel did! They were basically asked to do what Paul tells us to do here: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.” (Romans 12:1)
I love these lists of names! They make us remember that our God loves us individually and that He knows us by name! In this case these lists show us that these people, just by being there were doing God's Will. They didn't have to do anything that we would think of as "special", but just live their normal day to day life, and because they did that, God honored them by putting their names in His Holy Word, so that many generations of believers would know them as people who loved the Lord. That's encouraging to us too, and shows us that God isn't looking for us to do extra special things, but instead just wants us to be the son or daughter that He created us to be. This should also remind us that even if no other human being recognize or appreciate something we've done for the Lord, that He has seen what we've done and He appreciates it and will reward us. Nehemiah chapter 11 This chapter is difficult to comment on. After the book of Nehemiah I am going to take a break from Bible study but will be back in a while. Good job! The one thing that keeps standing out for me is that God gave them great joy, (Nehemiah 12:43) just as He gives all He has saved great joy! And with that joy, God saw to it that everyone was provided for as well - and the provisions were given joyfully, not grudgingly. Yes, the Jews kept and still keep meticulous records of their genealogy. Sadly much of it's been lost over all these years due to all the times various nations have tried to wipe them out, but that's ok, because God knows who belongs to what tribe and He knows exactly where everyone is.
I Just realized this will be the last chapter in Nehemiah sooooooo we need to do another book tomorrow.

Good job! I like how it points out that God's laws are made for our benefit; to help us, not to hurt us. I moved your post about Malachi to a new thread. I'll lock this so you won't post here again. Remember to start a new thread for each new book.
