I've felt for awhile that our freedom of speech would soon be gone. Other people have mentioned seeing it in the way Facebook bans people and articles or songs because of Conservative Christian content. I see it in the many times someone that's in a high position either locally or state or federal, or perhaps a teacher, or professor, has said something on social media that wasn't politically correct, and sometimes that was just plain horrible. The problem is that these people are being censored and even loosing their jobs because of what they wrote on their page. That's what freedom of speech is all about. We don't have to like what someone says or does, whether they're against blacks, or gays, or muslims or whatever. Our constitution gives them the right to speak their mind, just as I have the right to say that I believe that certain things are sinful because that's what the Bible says. But instead of people being horrified by this and realizing that their freedom of speech is about to go out the window, they're applauding the censoring and firing of these people who expressed their opinions. I didn't like what many of them said either, but it's just like what happened in Germany. No one will say anything until they're the ones it's happening to. Well, it won't be long now, before it's us.
So we need to remember what Peter said: “The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 4:7–8) “If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 4:11) People are watching us to see how we'll react. We need to show them Jesus, and what He's done for us. They need to see us filled with the same joy that carried Jesus through the cross, not a bunch of glum people. But people who love the Lord and are filled with His joy for the Hope He has given us!
Having said this, I saw an interesting article about this that surprised me and showed me that we were losing that freedom even faster than I thought. I'll post a short bit of it here, but you'll have to click on the link to read it all - trust me, it's worth it!
Colleges: A Force For Evil
Many of the nation's colleges have become a force for evil and a focal point for the destruction of traditional American values. The threat to our future lies in the fact that today's college students are tomorrow's teachers, professors, judges, attorneys, legislators and policymakers. A recent Brookings Institution poll suggests that nearly half of college students believe that hate speech is not protected by the First Amendment. Of course, it is. Fifty-one percent of students think that it's acceptable to shout down a speaker with whom they disagree. About 20 percent of students hold that it's acceptable to use violence to prevent a speaker from speaking, over 50 percent say colleges should prohibit speech and viewpoints that might offend certain people. Contempt for the First Amendment and other constitutional guarantees is probably shared by the students' high school teachers, as well as many college professors.
Brainwashing and indoctrination of young people has produced some predictable results, as shown by a recent Gallup Poll. For the past 18 years, Gallup has asked adults how proud they are to be Americans. This year, only 47 percent say they are "extremely proud," well below the peak of 70 percent in 2003. The least proud to be Americans are nonwhites, young adults and college graduates. The proudest Americans are those older than 50 and those who did not graduate from college. The latter might be explained by their limited exposure to America's academic elite.
