This has been bothering me for a long time and every time I hear about it on the news I just want to scream! It's as though no one in the federal or state governments has any common sense left, or much intelligence either for that matter. It really makes me wonder what they're up to because they're obviously not at all interested in helping people get off drugs. To start with, they aren't looking at why people are addicted to drugs or why they're trying drugs. They can't do that though, because if they did, they'd have to call it what it really is, sin, instead of "a disease". I want to tell them to open their eyes and look around at what kids today are growing up on: constant TV, radio, and internet commercials and ads about drugs, including narcotics. They're seeing drugs for everything and are used to being given drugs whenever something is wrong with them. If they have a headache, take a pill; if they're anxious, or stressed, take a pill. They see that if they're too shy, there's a pill for that; if they're too active, there's a pill for that; if they can't have sex, there's a pill for that too. They see their parents and friends taking pills for all kinds of things as well. Some may think that's gone on for a long time, but it really hasn't. There are more people in the US taking drugs legitimately, than anywhere else in the world. There are also more drugs taken legitimately in the US than anywhere else in the world, and if you add the illegal ones to that it's overwhelming. Kids are growing up seeing this.
The kids are also seeing all kinds of TV shows and movies that show people getting high on drugs and getting drunk. Drugs and alcohol play large parts in many shows and movies today, and are even part of many video and computer games.
The biggest thing I see though is that the government has taught the kids not to trust what they or any adult says. Kids aren't stupid. They know that Cocaine was once legal but then later was made illegal because it was found to be bad for us. They know that marijuana was illegal everywhere in the US for a long time. They've heard about the horrible things smoking it would do: cause birth defects, brain damage, that it was worse for your lungs than cigarettes, etc. They've heard stories of how it ruined an Uncle or a grandparents life; people have died because of it, and marriages have been broken up because of it. They know people have gone to prison for selling it and for using it. But now, all of a sudden, pot is legal for some people in some places in the US. This goes against all common sense, especially to a child or teenager who's going through a rebellious stage anyway. In the past, if something in an illegal substance was found to be helpful, (which isn't all that unusual) then scientists found a way to produce it separately so it could be taken safely, they didn't just legalize the whole kit and kaboodle! I can remember back around 1980 being able to buy a med over the counter for diarrhea that had opium in it. I was shocked when I discovered what was in it and later that same year it was taken off the market entirely. It wasn't that long ago that there were signs near every school that said something like "drug free zone" but now, there are pot factories right across the street from some schools! And people wonder why kids are taking drugs????
Not only that, but take a look at all that's gone on in our country over the last 8 years = horrible economic and racial turmoil, and a large increase in crime. Not to mention all the natural disasters that have been taking place as well. The whole family unit has been torn apart. Children are now being taught that it's natural to be homosexual or to change your sex. Children are learning about sex and deviant sexual acts at an age when that should be the last thing in the world on their minds. Children have Churches and parents telling them one thing and the school, government and media telling them another. What's good and pure is being called evil, and what's wicked is being called good. Obviously these things cause a great deal of stress for adults. What makes us think that the children aren't feeling that stress just as much as the adults have been? What have people done for ages when they felt overwhelmed? Generally, they turned to one of three things, God, alcohol or drugs, and they still do.
I'm as concerned as anyone about the drug and alcohol problem, but I know that it's not a disease, it's caused by sin, and the only way people will be free of it is to repent and turn to the One True God for salvation and help. No, I don't expect the government to suggest that, not anymore. But it still drives me crazy that they totally ignore the real causes of the so called "drug problem". Most of which they themselves created. Thankfully the Lord will judge those who are doing this, and that day isn't that far away anymore.
