Obama is meddling in the UK 'because he's Kenyan'
By Ari Yashar 4/23/2016
US President Barack Obama was put on the spot in London on Friday, when he was asked by a BBC reporter if it is any of his business whether the UK stays in the European Union (EU), indicating the backlash to his pressing for the UK to remain in the EU.Obama has been pushing to avoid a 'Brexit' as has UK Prime Minister David Cameron, but his comments ahead of the June referendum on the subject has raised a fury in Britain by those who view him as meddling in British democracy.
Two prominent politicians - London Mayor Boris Johnson and euroskeptic Ukip party leader MP Nigel Farage - even went so far as to say on Friday that Obama is opposing a UK exit from the EU because of his Kenyan background, claiming he has lingering hostility from British colonialism fueling his apparent opposition to greater British independence.
In the press conference on Friday, Obama was asked by the BBC reporter whether he was saying the special relationship between the US and UK "would be fundamentally damaged and changed by our exit? If so, how?"
"And are you also, do you have any sympathy with people who think this is none of your business?," added the reporter.
Addressing Cameron, she said, "some of your colleagues believe it’s utterly wrong that you have dragged our closest ally in the EU referendum campaign, what do you say to them? And is it appropriate for the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, to have brought up President Obama’s Kenyan ancestry in the context of this debate?"

Hypocrisy: In UK Obama did exactly what he ripped Netanyahu for doing
Jeff Dunetz April 24, 2016
...The reasons Obama traveled to London was to support the British premier’s position that the country should remain in the European collective. No one however, asked about the Obama hypocrisy of getting involved with the British EU vote while ripping Netanyahu’s address to congress.
During his opening remarks the president contended that his involvement was totally appropriate:
"Let me be clear, ultimately this is something the British voters have to decide for themselves, Part of our special relationship, being friends is to be honest, to let you know what I think."
Later he was asked “do you have any sympathy with those who say this is none of your business?”
"Let me repeat this is a decision for the people of the United Kingdom to make. I am not here to fix any votes. I am not casting a vote myself. I am offering my opinion and in democracies everybody should want more information, not less, people shouldn’t be afraid to hear an argument being made. That is not a threat."
Funny though, that is not how Obama reacted when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was invited to speak to congress about the P5+1 Iran deal. He didn’t say, because he lived in Iran’s neighborhood, Netanyahu was offering his opinion, and "in democracies everybody should want more information, not less, people shouldn’t be afraid to hear an argument being made." Obama saw it as a threat.

'Meddling Obama owes Netanyahu an apology'
By Nitsan Keidar 4/24/2016
US President Barack Obama's visit to the UK last week in which he gave unsolicited advice pressuring Britain to stay in the European Union (EU) has raised fury among Britons, but also disbelief among American Jewish leaders given Obama's apparent double standards.
Several top British politicians last Friday suggested Obama is pressuring the UK to stay in the EU because of his Kenyan background, arguing he wants the UK to be less independent given lingering hostility over Britain's colonialism.
In America his conduct was met with surprise as well, as prominent American Jewish leaders Alan Dershowitz and Elliott Abrams both noted Obama's hypocrisy given his anger at Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu when he spoke in Congress last March warning against the Iran nuclear deal.
Dershowitz, a Harvard law professor, wrote in an op-ed on Fox News last Friday that Obama defended his meddling in the UK vote "by suggesting that in a democracy, friends should be able to speak their minds, even when they are visiting another country."
"Nor did he stop at merely giving the British voters unsolicited advice, he also issued a not so veiled threat. He said that 'The UK is going to be in the back of the queue' on trade agreements if they exit the EU," pointed out Dershowitz.
The legal expert noted the hypocrisy given Obama's outrage when Netanyahu "spoke his mind about the Iran Deal."

Obama fails to swing Britain behind EU as 'Out' takes poll lead
By Guy Faulconbridge and Kate Holton Opponents of Britain's European Union membership have edged into the lead over the past two weeks, according to a YouGov poll which indicated President Barack Obama's intervention failed to swing support behind "In" vote in a June 23 referendum.
The online survey for The Times taken on April 25-26 showed support for the Out campaign had risen 3 percentage points to 42 percent since a similar survey on April 12-14, while support for the "In" campaign had risen 1 percentage point to 41 percent.
President Barack Obama on Friday warned Britain would be "in the back of the queue" for a trade deal with the United States if it dropped out of the EU, an unusually strong intervention into British politics that "In" campaigners welcomed.
"Some have portrayed Obama's intervention as backfiring - I wouldn't go that far but this poll does suggest that Obama hasn't given the remain team a boost at all," Anthony Wells, director of political research at YouGov, said by telephone.
"It hasn't been a game changer, it hasn't shifted opinion - it hasn't really made much difference at all," said Wells. "We have had a neck and neck for months now and nothing seems to be moving that."

Trump says Brexit wouldn't impact potential UK-U.S. trade deal if he is president - ITV
May 15, 2016
...During a visit to London last month President Barack Obama told Britons that if they elected to leave the EU in a June 23 referendum they would be at "the back of the queue" for a U.S. trade deal.
"I am going to treat everybody fairly but it wouldn't make any difference to me whether they were in the EU or not," Trump said in an interview with Piers Morgan, due to be aired in full on ITV on Monday. "You would certainly not be back of the queue, that I can tell you."
