German Schools Go "Halal" as Pork is Pulled from Menus

Religious tolerance has come head-to-head with freedom of choice in one German state, as some schools and nurseries in Schleswig-Holstein have pulled pork from their menus in deference to Muslim students, reported Deutsche Welle. The ruling party of Germany, however, is working to protect its citizens’ rights, introducing plans to preserve the pork option in public canteens.
“The protection of minorities – including for religious reasons – must not mean that the majority is overruled in their free decision by ill-conceived consideration,” Daniel Günther, the CDU parliamentary group leader, said.
Günther told local German paper Lübecker Nachrichten, “The consumption of pork belongs to our culture.” Religious tolerance also means “the appreciation and sufferance of other food cultures and lifestyles.”
Having pork on the menu, he said, does not obligate anyone to consume the pig product. “No one should be obliged to do so,” he said. “But we also don’t want the majority having to refrain from pork.”
