Doesn't this sound exactly like what the Catholic Church has taught for the last 2000 years??? God is talking about Israel and says of them that they've been lost and wandering for a long time and that: “Whoever found them devoured them; their enemies said, ‘We are not guilty, for they sinned against the LORD, their true pasture, the LORD, the hope of their fathers.’” (Jeremiah 50:7) As soon as I read that, it made me think of the RCC and how they've justified their hatred and antisemitism at first by saying that the Jew's killed Jesus, and by picking up and using replacement theology to say that the church has replaced Israel because of their sin; all the while making themselves out to be oh so very holy. They still say and teach these same things today, although they've begun to try and find a more diplomatic way of saying that the Jew's killed Jesus because too many people know the truth about that these days. (although that truth is also quickly fading into the background as more and more come against Israel)
These verses are actually talking about two different times as do many prophecies. The near fulfillment was during the time when the captive Jew's returned with Zerubbabel and the far fulfillment which will include the complete destruction of Babylon and the final restoration of Israel. In many of the prophecies though I'm also seeing a third type of fulfillment that has or is taking place during the end times. As I just said about this one, to me it also shows the attitude of the Catholic Church toward Israel. I'm aware that many others also have this same attitude and also teach replacement theology. The reason I'm laying the "blame" so to speak, squarely on the Catholic Church is because for centuries, it was the only church, and they were the ones that kept these lies alive for so long that now days many have picked them up and are espousing them as well. Remember that for many years it was only the clergy that had access to the Bible, and once it was available to the common person, the Catholic Church did all they could to keep them from reading it. They actually told people that no one was allowed to read it but their priests, and that this was good because they were the only ones capable of understanding it! of course we now know that their reason for doing that was because they were afraid that once the average person started reading it that they'd realize the church had been lying to them for years, which is exactly what eventually happened too. Sadly though the Catholic church was able to prevent it long enough that they were able to come up with plans on how to continue to keep blinders on the people even if they did try to read it.
It amazes me though how the Lord has captured what's going on in our time so well in His Word, as well as what happened in the past and what will happen in the future. It seems especially true in the books of Isaiah and Jeremiah, and even Daniel to some extent, and of course Revelation.
