US Slams Iran with New Sanctions Following Gulf Missile Incident
By Abra Forman December 31, 2015
The Obama administration is said to be preparing new sanctions in an attempt to cripple Iran’s ballistic missile program, following an incident in the Gulf last week in which Iran fired a missile dangerously close to a US warship.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the US Treasury Department is in the process of crafting the sanctions against individuals and companies in Iran, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates who are thought to have helped Iran develop its missile program.
US officials first threatened Iran with the new sanctions after a UN committee ruled that missile tests performed by Iran in October and November violated the terms of the nuclear deal. The Gulf incident, which occurred last week, may have spurred the US to finally impose the sanctions.
On Saturday, in what the US military called a “highly provocative” act, the Iranian navy launched several unguided rockets in close proximity to US warships and other commercial maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, with only 23 minutes’ notice of the test to the other ships.
The ships, including the USS Harry S. Truman and the FS Provence, a French frigate, were passing through the strait when the Iranian Revolutionary Guard vessels hailed them over maritime radio and announced a live-fire exercise.

Iran denies it fired rockets near US aircraft carrier in Gulf, brands claim 'psychological warfare'
31 Dec, 2015 RTNews
Tehran has officially denied that its Revolutionary Guards’ patrol vessel launched rockets in imminent proximity to the USS Harry S. Truman and its convoy entering the Persian Gulf, calling the allegation an act of “psychological warfare.”
On Tuesday, reports emerged that last Saturday the US aircraft carrier was intimidated after missiles were launched by an Iranian patrol vessel on a parallel course with the American naval convoy.

Iran says any U.S. sanctions on missiles illegal
Dec 31, 2015
Iran condemned on Thursday as arbitrary and illegal reported U.S. plans for new sanctions on international companies and individuals over Tehran's ballistic missile program.
"As we have declared to the American government ... Iran's missile program has no connection to the (nuclear) agreement," state television quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossein Jaber Ansari as saying.
In Washington, sources familiar with the situation said on Wednesday the U.S. government was preparing the sanctions, which the Wall Street Journal said would target about 12 companies and individuals in Iran, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates for their suspected role in developing Iran's missile program.
"Iran will resolutely respond to any interfering action by America against its defensive programs," said Jaber Ansari, rejecting any new sanctions as "arbitrary and illegal".
U.S. officials have said the Treasury Department retains a right under July's landmark nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers, including Washington, to blacklist Iranian entities suspected of involvement in missile development, the Journal said.
Iranian officials have said the supreme leader would view such penalties as violating the nuclear accord.

One day later: Obama backs off new Iran sanctions
By Elad Benari 1/1/2016
New American sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile program? Not so fast.
The White House has delayed its plan to impose new financial sanctions on Iran for its ballistic missile program, American officials said Thursday, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The announcement comes just one day after it was reported that the Obama administration is preparing new sanctions on international companies and individuals who played a role in Iran’s ballistic endeavors.
According to the officials, the decision to back off the new sanctions comes amid growing tensions with Iran over the nuclear deal struck earlier this year.
The officials said the Obama administration remains committed to combating Iran’s missile program and that sanctions being developed by the U.S. Treasury Department remain on the table. They also said imposing such penalties was legal under the landmark nuclear agreement forged between global powers and Iran in July.
But they offered no definitive timeline for when the sanctions would be imposed after the decision was made to delay them. At one point, they were scheduled to be announced Wednesday morning in Washington, according to a notification the White House sent to Congress.

Democrat slams own party over Iran missile breaches
By Ari Yashar 1/9/2016
In light of Iran's violation of UN sanctions by testing nuclear-capable medium-range ballistic missiles, New York Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) called out the leaders of his Democratic party who supported the Iran nuclear deal, asking why they haven't criticized the breach.
On October 10, Iran conducted a ballistic missile test, and a month later it tested another ballistic missile, with US officials revealing other undeclared tests occurred earlier than that. UN sanctions monitors confirmed in a report that the medium-range Emad rocket tested on October 10 is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, making it a violation of a UN Security Council resolution.
Iran has since further flouted expectations from the deal, by just last Tuesday publicly revealing its 14 underground "missile towns," with the latest facility being shown on Iran media as convoys of the nuclear-capable Emad missiles were transferred in.
“Iran is laughing in the face of the United States right now,” said Hikind. “Their continuous violations have been so predictable. It’s just a horrible deal for the United States.”
"Where are the elected officials who were in favor of this horrendous deal, and why can’t we hear them loud and clear?,” asked Hikind, specifying Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and Senator Corey Booker (D-NJ).
