Putin imposes sanctions, says country 'fully mobilized' to tackle threats from Turkey
By REUTERS 11/28/2015
MOSCOW- Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree imposing economic sanctions against Turkey on Saturday, four days after Turkey shot down a Russian warplane near the Syrian-Turkish border.
The Kremlin website said the measures would affect imports of some Turkish products, operations of Turkish companies in Russia, and employment of Turkish staff by Russian firms.
The Kremlin added that President Vladimir Putin is fully mobilized to tackle what Moscow regards as an unprecedented threat from Turkey following the shooting down of one of its warplanes by a Turkish F-16, the Russian leader's spokesman said on earlier Saturday.
In response to the announcement, a senior Turkish official told Reuters that sanctions imposed by Moscow on Turkey only serve to deepen the problem between them.
"Sanctions like this would only damage relations. These steps do not make anything easier, but deepen the problem," the official said.

Turkey warns Putin not to 'play with fire'
November 27, 2015 FoxNews.com
Turkey's president Tayyip Erdogan on Friday warned Vladimir Putin not to "play with fire" as their war of words continued to escalate over the downing of a jet.
In a speech broadcast live on television, Erdogan added he does not want to harm relations with Moscow and hopes to meet the Russian President at a climate conference in Paris next week, Reuters reported.
Putin has refused to contact Erdogan because Ankara does not to apologize for the downing of the Russian warplane, Putin aide Yuri Ushakov told Reuters Friday.
"We see Turkey's unwillingness to simply apologize for the incident with the plane," Ushakov told reporters when asked why Putin has refused to talk with Erdogan
The aid said the Kremlin had received a request from Ankara about a meeting in Paris Nov. 30.
On Thursday, Putin again slammed Turkey's explanations for the shoot down near the border with Syria, saying that the warplane's flight details had been passed to the U.S. in advance and should have been known to the Turkish government.
"The American side, which leads the coalition that Turkey belongs to, knew about the location and time of our planes' flights, and we were hit exactly there and at that time," Putin said during a news conference with French President Francois Hollande, during which the two leaders vowed to increase cooperation in the fight against ISIS.
"Why did we pass this information to the Americans?" Putin went on to say. "Either they were not controlling what their allies were doing, or they are leaking this information all over the place."
Turkey has said it shot down the Su-24 bomber Tuesday after it flew into its airspace for 17 seconds despite repeated warnings. Putin dismissed that claim again Thursday, calling the Turkish explanations "rubbish."

Erdogan praises terror wave as Palestinian 'noble fight'
By Dalit Halevi 11/27/2015
Amid his diplomatic row with Russia this week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan found time to express support for the latest Palestinian Arab terror wave against Israel.
Speaking at a meeting on Wednesday of finance ministers of the Islamic Cooperation Organization, Erdogan expressed his full solidarity with the Palestinian Arab people in their struggle against Israel, including the current “Al-Quds Intifada”, as Hamas calls it, and which has killed 22 Israelis since the beginning of October.
Erdogan described the terror wave as a Palestinian "noble fight" in defense of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy places.
He blasted Israel for imposing a “siege” on Gaza, saying that "the Gaza Strip has become an open prison because of the continuing siege and this situation must not continue."
It should be noted that Turkey gives full support to Hamas, which is expressed through economic aid delivered through charities, and permits Hamas’s Al-Qassam Brigades to operate on Turkish territory. Israel has in the past claimed that Hamas officials living in Turkey are responsible for planning terror attacks against Israel.

If Putin keeps escalating, Turkey will close the straits
Mark Langfan November 30, 2015
Putin is close to boxing himself into the Black Sea with the full might of NATO standing behind a Turkish closure of the Bosphorus Straits and the Dardenelles under the 1936 Montreux Convention. The “military” provisions of the Montreux Convention were never really fully engaged during World WarII because Turkey was always technically neutral. With the critical loss of Iraq to Great Britain in the Nazi’s failed Golden Square Coup attempt in May 1941, and Churchill’s concomitant capture and occupation of Iraq, Hitler never had the order of battle available to fight with Turkey.
However, with Putin escalating his war of words against Turkey, Turkey may very well invoke articles 20 or 21 of the Montreux Convention which would mean Turkey could immediately shut-down any Russian military naval vessel through the Straits, crippling Putin’s Syrian War efforts. Therefore, Putin would be well advised to dampen-down his rhetoric, and start fighting the Islamic State instead of Turkish, Saudi, and Western-backed Syrian Rebels.

Turkey threatens to close the straits, while Russia has a missile cruiser right there off of the Syrian coast. Russia news says that Turkey has two subs, if they do or not surely Russia would have subs in the area.

Yes, Russia has numerous subs in the area of which are likely surrounding Turkey, let alone their subs.
Paul Begley makes interesting points about Turkey's self interests and the term 'climate chaos'.

Turkey: Wrong Partner to Fight Terror
By Burak Bekdil December 1, 2015
In Erdogan’s usual Sunni supremacist language, he accused the victims of jihad rather than the jihadists.
“New tragedies will be inevitable,” Erdogan said, “if the rising racism in Europe and other countries is not stopped.” Yet Erdogan willingly ignores the rising racism, xenophobia, and anti-western, jihadist sentiments that increasingly command the hearts and minds of his fellow Turks.
How should Erdogan fight Islamic terror — something he does not believe exists? One of Erdogan’s famous remarks is, “there is no Islamic terror.” But he thinks that “just like fascism,” Zionism is a crime against humanity.
It is so funny that the free world cannot see that its ally in fighting the jihadists is another jihadist.
Racism is bad, no doubt. But it cannot be the reason why jihadists kill “infidels,” including fellow Muslims in Muslim lands. Sadly, the free world feels compelled to partner with the wrong country in its fight against Islamic terror.
The host of this year’s G-20 summit, which came right after the Nov. 13 Paris attacks, was Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In his usual Sunni supremacist language, he accused the victims of jihad rather than the jihadists. “New tragedies will be inevitable,” he said, “if the rising racism in Europe and other countries is not stopped. Racism, coupled with enmity against Islam, is the greatest disaster, the greatest threat.”
Yet Erdogan willingly ignores the rising racism, xenophobia, and anti-western, jihadist sentiments that increasingly command the hearts and minds of his fellow Turks. A quick look at a few sports games and fan behavior in recent weeks would reveal much about the Turkish mind and heart.

Putin: Turkey shot down Russian warplane to protect ISIS oil
By Arutz Sheva Staff 11/30/2015
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday accused Ankara of shooting down a Russian warplane last week to protect supplies of oil from the Islamic State group to Turkey.
"We have every reason to think that the decision to shoot down our plane was dictated by the desire to protect the oil supply lines to Turkish territory, right to the ports where it is loaded onto tankers," Putin said during a news conference on the fringes of UN climate talks near Paris.
"We have received additional information which unfortunately confirms that this oil, produced in areas controlled by the Islamic State and other terrorist organizations, is transported on an industrial scale to Turkey."
After the Su-24 bomber was downed on the Syrian border last week, Putin accused the Turks of being "accomplices of terrorists" and said oil from ISIS territory was being exported through Turkey.

Obama backs Turkey against Russia after Erdogan meet
By Arutz Sheva Staff 12/1/2015
US President Barack Obama led calls Tuesday for Turkey and Russia to end their dispute over the downing of a Russian fighter jet and focus instead on Islamic State (ISIS).
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg urged key ally Turkey and Russia to change tack and find ways to avoid a repeat of an incident which threatens to scupper efforts to forge a common front against ISIS after the group's attacks in Paris left 130 murdered.
Obama was frank about what both sides should do.
"I want to be very clear: Turkey is a NATO ally. The US supports Turkish rights to defend itself and its airspace and its territory," Obama said after meeting his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Paris.
"We all have a common enemy and that is ISIL and I want to make sure we focus on that threat," Obama said, using an alternative name for ISIS.
Erdogan, who has demanded that Russian President Vladimir Putin provide evidence to back up charges Ankara trades in oil with ISIS - charges that were exposed in documents seized by US special forces - said he too was keen to move on.
"We are always willing to resort to the diplomatic language (...) we want to avoid the tensions," he said.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu meanwhile said Russia should re-establish communication channels instead of making "baseless accusations" that Ankara shot down the jet to keep hidden oil deals with ISIS which help fund the group's deadly activities.
"We should sit at the table and discuss what to do instead of making baseless accusations," Davutoglu said in Ankara.

World War III Draws Closer As Russia Accuses Turkey Of Being ‘Secret Allies’ With ISIS
By Michael Snyder, on November 30th, 2015
Are Russia and Turkey on the verge of going to war? In remarks that were almost entirely ignored by the western media, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the Turkish government of being “secret allies” with ISIS on Friday. And on Monday, the Russians announced that they would be attempting to seal the border between Syria and Turkey, and we also learned that the Russians have been rushing heavy artillery units into Syria. As tensions between Russia and Turkey continue to escalate, could we be in danger of seeing World War III erupt in the Middle East?
The Russians have clearly become convinced that Turkey is at the core of the problems in Syria, and that is why the Russians now plan to completely seal Syria’s border with Turkey. Lavrov seems to think that this will represent a giant step toward defeating terror groups such as ISIS…
“We are convinced that by blocking the border we will in many respects solve the tasks to eradicate terrorism on Syrian soil.”
And the Russians are right about this. ISIS militants use Turkey as a home base, and it has been documented that Turkey has been “training ISIS militants, funneling weapons to them, buying their oil, and tending to their wounded in Turkish hospitals”.
It was already common knowledge that Turkey was doing all of these things, but now the Russian government is publicly accusing the Turkish government of being “secret allies” with ISIS. When Lavrov chose to use these words on Friday, he knew exactly what he was saying…
“We think it highly cynical when some of the countries speak about their commitment to the corresponding United Nations Security Council resolutions and declare themselves members of anti-terrorist coalitions but in reality are playing a game where terrorists are allocated the role of secret allies,” Lavrov stressed. “We have more and more questions about Ankara’s real plans and the degree of its readiness to exterminate terrorism, in particular in Syria, and its commitment to the normalization of the situation in Syria.”
So why would Turkey want to be allies with ISIS?
Well, first of all the Turkish government hates the Assad regime in Syria and would love to see it eliminated.
Secondly, ISIS has been selling hundreds of millions of dollars worth of stolen oil in Turkey, and it has been alleged that the Turkish president’s own family is involved.
This was all supposed to be on the down low, but now the Russians are extremely angry and they are airing this dirty laundry for all the world to see. On Monday, Vladimir Putin said that his government had “received additional information” that ISIS is shipping oil to Turkey on an “industrial scale”…

Turkey accuses Russia of profiting from ISIS oil
By Max Delany 12/3/2015
(AFP) Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday vowed Turkey's leadership would be made to regret the downing of one of Russia's warplanes as Moscow announced a halt to talks on a major gas pipeline project.
As Putin fired another salvo in his mounting war of words with NATO member Turkey his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared he had "proof" that Russia was involved in illegal oil trading with the Islamic State (ISIS) group in Syria.
Turkey has become Moscow's prime international sparring partner after it shot down a Russian jet on its border with Syria on November 24 - sparking fury in Russia and economic sanctions from the Kremlin.
Erdogan's allegations of Russian complicity with ISIS echo allegations made by Putin against Turkey and its leader in recent days.
"We will not forget this complicity with terrorists. We always considered and will always consider treachery to be the ultimate and lowest act. Let those in Turkey who shot our pilots in the back know this," Putin told lawmakers in his annual state of the nation speech, which also focused on Russia's airstrikes in Syria.
"We know for example who in Turkey fills their pockets and allows terrorists to make money from the stolen oil in Syria," Putin said.
"It is precisely with this money that the bandits recruit mercenaries, buy arms and organize inhuman terrorist acts aimed against our citizens, the citizens of France, Lebanon, Mali and other countries."
Erdogan has furiously denied the allegations against him and his family and said Turkey had proof that Russia was, in fact, involved in trading oil with ISIS.
"We have the proof in our hands. We will reveal it to the world," the Turkish leader said in a televised speech in Ankara.

Turkey’s Alliance with the West Is Crumbling under Islamic Militancy
by Victor Davis Hanson December 3, 2015
Turkey often appeals to the West for support, given its longtime membership in NATO. Now, Turkish leadership is in a shouting match with Russia’s provocative president, Vladimir Putin, over Turkey’s downing of a Russian jet in probable Turkish airspace. Each country has accused the other of helping terrorists in Syria.
The problem with Turkey and the West, however, is that their relationship is decades out of date. What was once an alliance is now nothing special at all.
Barack Obama used to lecture reluctant Europeans about why they should accept Turkey into the European Union as its first Islamic member. Obama boasted of a “special friendship” with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan. As president, Obama suddenly forgot the promise he made as a senator to formally acknowledge the Armenian genocide committed by the Turks in the early 1900s.
Turkey has become a favorite stop abroad for Obama to lecture his fellow Americans about their ethical shortcomings, from past treatment of Native Americans to their present supposed xenophobia over not accepting Syrian refugees en masse.
Yet the more Obama has appeased Erdogan, the more anti-Western and anti-American Turkey has become.

EU warns Russia and Turkey are headed for open war
By Ari Yashar 2/23/2016
EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini warned on Tuesday that Russia and Turkey are headed towards a "hot war," as she voiced concerns that the growing tensions between the two on the Syrian border risk spilling over into open warfare.
Speaking at a debate at the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee in Brussels, Mogherini said, "we are always referring to Syria as a proxy war among regional actors. This risks to become something bigger than this."
"I'm not thinking of a cold war. No, we risk a hot war among different actors than the one we always think of. Not necessarily Russia and the United States, but Russia and Turkey, could be," she said.
"As Europeans, we have a clear interest in trying to contain and scale down the tensions."
Mogherini's statements come in the wake of a ceasefire in Syria announced by the US and Russia which is to go into effect on Saturday. There remain huge doubts over the implementation of the deal, as it does not take into account Islamic State (ISIS) or Al Qaeda's Syrian affiliate Nusra Front, which Russia could continue striking.
Her comments also come as US Secretary of State John Kerry warned Tuesday that if Russia and the Syrian regime are not serious about a political transition, he has a "Plan B" that likely would consist of a military escalation.

Russian warships and naval assets sailing through Bosphorus strait has Turkey frightened
Laura Pitel 5 March 2016
He has been watching boats on the Bosphorus strait for two decades; but, until recently, it had been years since Serhat Guvenc had glimpsed a Russian warship. Common in the Cold War era and again during the Balkans conflict, they had become a rare sight on the mighty waterway that transects the ancient city of Istanbul and separates Europe from Asia.
Now, barely a day goes by when the academic and amateur ship-spotter fails to catch sight of a Russian missile cruiser, landing ship or submarine. They goad Turkey by sailing through the heart of its biggest city to supply the conflict in Syria. “It’s like rubbing salt on an open wound,” Mr Guvenc says.
Turkey and Russia have supported opposing sides in the Syrian conflict since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began in 2011. Since November, when Turkey shot down a Russian Sukhoi-24 jet, the relationship has teetered on the brink of all-out war. But thanks to a 1930s treaty, in peace time foreign states “enjoy the freedom” to send military and commercial ships from the Black Sea down to the Mediterranean. ...
Already this year, Russian warships have made almost four dozen trips up and down the strait. They include the hulking Moskva, a guided missile cruiser that is the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and provides air cover for Moscow’s deployment in Syria. It sports a red star on each side, and huge silver missiles that glint on deck in the sun.
One of the most frequent visitors of 2016 has been the Yamal 156, a rusting, Soviet-era, Ropucha-class large landing ship that offloads vehicles, cargo and troops on to beaches. It has already made three trips to Syria and back.
The 1936 Montreux Convention gives Turkey control of the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles, the strait that leads into the Mediterranean; but it also requires Turkey to grant freedom of passage to commercial and naval ships. Like all foreign powers, however, Russia must inform Turkey before sending a military vessel. This has led to surprising co‑operation between the two states, despite the fraying of relations. Weeks after the downing of the Russian jet the Turkish coastguard escorted the Rostov-na-donu, an imposing black submarine armed with Kalibr cruise missiles, as it made its way down through the city. According to the spotters, it was trailed by a Turkish anti-submarine warfare patrol boat for intelligence purposes.
